💡 Did You Know? Not All Workplace Drug Tests Are the Same

When an employer requires drug testing, the type of test and the substances being screened for can depend on the position, industry, and company policy.

For example, some employers may use a 5-panel drug screen, while others may require a broader panel based on the needs of the workplace.

It’s also important for employers to have a clear, consistent drug-testing policy and to make sure employees understand what is being tested and when testing may be required.

Having the right screening process in place can help employers promote a safer workplace while keeping their policies consistent and compliant.

Questions about workplace drug screening? HealthWorks-WNY is here to help.

Do Your Employees Need Respirator Medical Clearance?

If your employees are required to wear a respirator on the job, there’s more to compliance than simply selecting the right mask.

Under OSHA’s respiratory protection standard, employees must be medically evaluated before they are fit tested or required to use a respirator in the workplace.

A proper respiratory protection program may include:

✅ Medical evaluation to determine whether an employee can safely use the required respirator
✅ Respirator fit testing to ensure the facepiece provides an adequate seal
✅ Pulmonary function testing (when medically indicated or required by the program)
✅ Appropriate training on respirator use, limitations, cleaning, maintenance, and storage

Why does this matter? Respirators can place additional physical demands on workers, and an improperly fitted respirator may not provide the protection it is designed to provide.

At HealthWorks-WNY, we help employers navigate the medical clearance and fit-testing process so their employees can use respiratory protection safely and compliantly.

What’s the difference between a “fit for duty” exam and a pre-employment physical?

A pre-employment physical helps determine whether a candidate can safely perform the essential functions of a job before starting employment.

A fit-for-duty evaluation is typically performed after an injury, illness, or extended leave to determine whether an employee can safely return to work.

Both play an important role in workplace safety, reducing injury risk, and ensuring employees are physically capable of performing their job duties safely.

At HealthWorks-WNY, we work with employers to provide occupational health services tailored to their workforce and compliance needs.
