Gardening this time of year is a pleasure.
New fronds unfurling, native annuals starting to bloom, Epimedium catching the light.
Things slow down in the garden, as we stop and pay attention, and life speeds up.

Passing the torch paid off.

Forrest handed off the brick paving to Avery and Cole—herringbone field with a clean soldier course, set on a properly prepared base for long-term stability and drainage.
Our lovely client stopped by today to let us know she had an open house and many visitors noticed and complimented the new patio and path.

Nice work and Cole!

This patio needed a reset.

We started with full demolition and removal, then regraded the subsoil and rebuilt the base. Pavers were set and finished with polysand, with a french drain installed along the edge to handle drainage and protect the space long term.
Led by Ashley, with the crew bringing it across the finish line.

Thanks, and Andrew!

A short dry stack retaining wall in a tricky location where paths merge and safety is a top priority. The homeowner had some nice peices of obsidian that were incorporated when the wall was constructed, nice touch!

We reworked this front garden to improve safety and create more usable garden space. A portion of this lawn has struggled- so let's work with the space.
The old wood steps had become slippery. We replaced them with tumbled bluestone risers, cut to fit the existing footprint and grade.
We reshaped the lawn edge with flat bar steel to define a sweeping path and carved out additional bed space. A low retaining wall was built on the downhill side to hold a new dry bed/rock garden, mounded with sandy loam and top-dressed with decomposed granite.
One edge of the path is lined with stone for structure and containment. A slotted boulder intersects the steel edging — a small detail that ties the materials together.
Simple materials. Clear lines. Better function.

New plants will be added over time!

Fresh bark mulch for one of our lovely clients.
Mulch does more than make a garden look finished.
It protects soil from heavy winter rain, reduces erosion, and helps regulate soil temperature through the seasons. It suppresses weeds, holds moisture in summer, and slowly breaks down to feed the soil life below.
In the Pacific Northwest, that layer matters. Our rains can compact exposed soil quickly. A few inches of bark helps cushion the impact and keeps structure intact.
Healthy soil = healthier plants.
Simple work. Big impact.

This is so great y'all. Having 3 licensed contractors gives us all a lot more flexibility, ease of mind if some folks take vacation, and to put it bluntly, CLOUT.
To be a fully licensed contractor there are 6 tests they must pass covering laws, safety, plant id, construction, irrigation, and backflow.
And to keep your license, 16 hours of continuing education every two years for the first 6 years and 8 hours every year after that.
And then, of course, all the fees that come with licensing!!

Thank you , and Forrest for being our officials here.

Part of the fun in the design process is helping clients visualize their space differently. We are so thankful for great tech to help us with this process!

This rendering paired with a plant list and a meeting to go over the whys, what-ifs, how's, likes and dislikes opens up opportunities to collaborate and learn together.

This is what COULD be...in a few years. Gorgeous, right?

Thanks to Robin Hood Garden Club for the speaking invitation! Dale and I had a great time with this great group of fellow gardeners. It was so satisfying to share about something we are passionate about with others who feel the same.

Our presentation was titled "Looking at our watershed through a macro and micro lens".
Understanding the larger (macro) scale of our Tualatin River Watershed helps us to imagine that our smaller (micro) residential spaces could be considered watersheds. We can then mimic nature in our own small spaces to create more refuge for native plant and animal species to thrive with a larger goal of creating refuge corridors as we connect our small outdoor spaces. Each of us in small ways can collectively make a big change if we put our minds on the bigger picture.

Larger groups , such as Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District, Columbia Land Trust, Bird Alliance Oregon, Clean Water Services can be looked to for guidance in their efforts to restore large areas of land AND companies like can be partners in this effort to help people reach their goals of Backyard Habitat certification and/or creating a friendlier place for wildlife to find food, shelter, and refuge.
This is a hopeful perspective with small action steps that feel possible! We came away for our time together feeling even more inspired to keep working towards creating beautiful, healthy, sustainable landscapes.

A few quiet moments out at Clean Water Services just before the rain rolled in. Wildlife was active, the water was calm, and then the downpour sent us to an early lunch. All part of working outdoors.

Back out at the Clean Water Services Fernhill Wetlands today. We’re grateful for the opportunity to care for the plantings, maintain clear sightlines for visitor safety, and share space with the wildlife that makes this place so special.
We prioritize electric equipment here to keep noise to a minimum, and it’s always a pleasure to exchange friendly hellos with park visitors while we work.
