I had a few people ask about the rear porch post on the house we restored last summer. The original was kept, but not copied in the initial reconstruction. I acquired some old growth longleaf, cut it to size then laid it beside the original. Transferred the layout and carved the new one. If I remember correctly this was one of the first times Eric put a chisel to work. joinery

About this time last year I took on a project for my good friend Bob Moffie and I just realized I never posted the before and after photos. This great early house in his back yard was moved there in the 70’s to make room for a power plant. It needed most of the siding replaced and had rot around the doors. All that was replaced/ repaired and overhangs were added. The rear porch post and rails were replaced with old growth pine. This house has had a long history of work beginning in the mid 18th century as a one over one, with engaged porches and shed room, beaded ceiling joists and exposed corner posts with a flush sheathed interior. It came back to life once again last year and I’m grateful to have had the chance to play a part in the story of this old house. Thanks to David Peede and Eric Melvin for all the help too!

Old surface repairs are the most satisfying. Found a good match for the original broken hinge, removed the later hinge, made it just about go away. If pictures don’t show you can’t see it in person. First picture is finished. Second picture is how it came in, third is the ghost. Mark od the later hinge.

Finished up a hand made copy of an 18th century Roanoke river basin work table for the Bradford-Denton house kitchen in Halifax Nc. This one is based on a period example with a mix of cypress and yellow pine with oak legs chamfered on 3 sides with beaded corners and a pinned top. Finished with linseed oil paint like the original one. I can’t wait to see some soot rings from pans on this one!

Back at work in the shop. Swipe too see the before. At some point in the 20th century a batwing escutcheon was applied. I had a period insert escutcheon that fit perfectly and matched the rest of the desk. After some filler I was able to make the rest look a little better on this southern desk’s fall board.
