BACKGROUND STORY TIME:
So, as I mentioned in my last post, the pair of rocking chairs I recently refurbished for and are family heirlooms, originally belonging to Jackie’s great-grandmother of South Georgia. The family is unsure if an exact date of purchase, but early 1900s is a safe estimate.
-
At least three generations of babies were rocked in these chairs—and as those children grew up they often rocked themselves in the same chairs. My client and new friend, Jackie, being one of those children.
-
There were layers of old fabric on the chairs, but when I got down to what I believe to be the original fabric, something special caught my eye. As pictured above, there is a light green patch of fabric that was hand sewn on to the original fabric on the seat of this chair. Sewn by either by Jackie’s grandmother or great-grandmother in efforts to repair a tear in the seat. Seeing this patch made this project all the more special for me. I have seen hand stitchings like this one many times before, sewn by my grandmothers and great-grandmothers. Patching what they could with what they had.
-
As a firm believer in preserving history when able, instead of ripping off this hand sewn patch and the sentiment behind it, I decided to clean this layer of fabric and leave it be. Then, in the final stages of refurbishment, I asked .boucher to use some of his own hand sewing skills on a couple of details in order to carry the old sentiment of love and hard work into this new chapter of design for the chairs. Thank you, Ant!!
