Motown Museum joins our Motown alumni and the musical community in mourning the passing of Rosalind Ashford-Holmes, original member of Martha & The Vandellas.
Born in Detroit in 1943, Ashford-Holmes auditioned in 1957 for manager Edward Larkins, who was looking to put together a vocal group. Alongside Martha Reeves, Annette Beard Helton, and Gloria Williams, she was soon singing as a member of the Del-Phis, performing live, recording, and working with future Motown talent such as Funk Brother Joe Hunter, vocalist J.J. Barnes, and guitarist / producer Don Davis.
After Motown's Head of A&R, William "Mickey" Stevenson, heard Reeves performing at the 20 Grand, Reeves began working for the company. The Del-Phis, renamed The Vandellas, sang on Marvin Gaye songs, including his breakout hit "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow." In 1962, they signed with Motown. The group recorded as The Vels and, with the departure of Williams, officially became Martha & The Vandellas.
As the group's soprano, Ashford-Holmes can be heard on Vandellas classics such as "Come And Get These Memories," "Heat Wave," and "Quicksand." With Betty Kelly joining the group in place of Beard Helton, Martha & The Vandellas continued their string of hits, including "Dancing In The Street," "Wild One," "Nowhere To Run," "My Baby Loves Me," "I'm Ready For Love," and "Jimmy Mack."
In 1968, Ashford-Holmes stepped away from the group, having left her imprint on Motown's "Sound of Young America." In 1995, Martha & The Vandellas were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and in 1999, "Dancing In The Street" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Affectionately known as "Roz," Ashford-Holmes reunited with Annette Sterling Helton to tour as The Original Vandellas. Roz was a welcome presence at many Motown Museum events, including the 2019 Founder's Day celebration, where the original trio of Martha, Annette, and Roz reunited on Rocket Plaza. Rosalind Ashford-Holmes' music and legacy will live on, and our thoughts are with her family, friends, and fans.
