With a bit more fussing, my new Japanese smoothing plane takes full width shavings less than .002" (that's less than two thousandths of an inch!) shavings off this piece of black walnut, leaving a silky smooth surface that would only be dulled down by sanding.

That is not mahogany stain on the grip if this carving knife. I leave it on there as a reminder to be careful. This is the little ****er that cut my index finger down to the bone last fall.

The price of wood has more than doubled in this last year. The piece of glass I picked up today for a picture frame would have been around $8.00 last summer. Today I paid over $17. for it. I will do my best to keep the cost of picture framing within reason, but my prices are going to have to go up, or I am out of the picture framing biz. One gets the feeling that this whole "inflation" thing is making a few people a lot of money.
