With unwavering dedication, Jackie Brown of Wimauma embodies the values of faith, family, community service, and hard work, which were instilled in her from a young age as a farm worker. The wisdom she gained was largely passed down through oral tradition, rich in stories that, though unrecorded, profoundly shaped her perspective. “I witnessed things that no child should ever have to see,” she reflected, choosing to focus on the strength she derived from those experiences rather than the hardship. This resilience enabled her to raise two triumphant children who have gone on to achieve great success. Her own career path is a testament to her perseverance, beginning with her role at the Board of County Commissioners and leading to the establishment of Wimauma's first family day care center. One of her greatest passions is sharing the history of Wimauma, bringing its stories to life. Today in , we had the privilege of learning about her inspiring 2023 initiative, “DiscoverWimauma,” which was sparked by the quest to honor and correctly identify the burial grounds of African Americans who lived in Wimauma. It’s tough to get older and sometimes we need some help. It’s not always easy to admit. But what a great help it is to maybe have someone run an errand for you, give you your meds, help you get up in the morning, take a shower, get breakfast, just the ordinary day to day routine activities that can become harder, maybe even impossible without help.
Home health care is highly competitive and agencies operate all over south county. Today, Jessica Galarza of First Light Home Care gave us the update today on trends in that space, such as costs, services available and maybe just as important, services not available. “Have your best day everyday!” is her mantra and what a pleasure it was in club today to hear what’s new in home health care.

Who will lead our school
board in twenty years? Our city commission or county council? Who will be our mayor or governor?
It starts with youth.
Our club contributes thousands of dollars a year to scholarships for graduating seniors of Lennard and East Bay High Schools.
This year again HCA Florida South Shore and staff contributed $5,000 toward that effort, and presented the check on the day when about two dozen of the students awarded scholarships attended Rotary to tell their stories. It’s a glorious day in south county when we can receive money and have the recipients present as well in !

A room full of students and a big check up front. Without help from HCA Florida South Shore, some of these college bound seniors wouldn’t be receiving scholarships.
HCA came through with $5,000 this year AGAIN.
We thank you, Lisa Howard from HCA, for the generosity of the hospital and its staff. These young leaders thank you as well!

PAIN.

Sometimes it’s temporary but when it persists, and affects your life, you need a pain specialist. About 1 in 4 Americans suffer from chronic pain.
Dr Jim Warren of Apollo Pain Management in Sun City Center is an expert on this. He dropped by today to share some of his approaches such as injections, ablations, and other minimally invasive procedures that can provide relief, sometimes for months.

What an honor! Our club was singled out twice today, first for our digital media, and then for our annual South Shore Community Health Fair sponsored by HCA Florida South Shore. Much thanks to DG Linda Devine for this recognition! Great time today at the annual District Conference.
The health fair produces dollars we give to college bound graduates of East Bay and Lennard High Schools.

When someone brings fossils to our club, it’s sometimes insulting because a few of us are already old enough to fit into that classification. But seriously, folks, our neighboring town, Ruskin, is a treasure trove of fossils. In fact, the greatest discovery of Pleistocene fossils ever found is here. And a must-see: The Paleo Preserve Fossil Museum with fossils, photos, and newspaper articles from the famous Leisey Shell Pit discovery of 1983. The museum is inside and part of the Camp Bayou Nature Preserve in Ruskin at 4140 24th St SE. Our guests today, Barry O’Shaughnessy and Patty Moore, are huge volunteers for both, and they’re always looking for others to pitch in. It’s Florida history right here in South County. About 85% of American households have a working washing machine.
But across the world, only 70% of households enjoy this common appliance.
What about in our own backyard?
Recently, our director of projects Ann Hammond discovered a family, a very large family, with no washing machine and no money.

As a Rotarian, she responded as you might think.

Over the weekend there was a special delivery at this home.

And a song of praise from the recipient, a grandmother who takes care of so many kids.

At Rotary we just want to do good in the world. That’s all.
