Former fire retardant (FR) material auditor here!
All jokes aside, tags on your pillows and mattresses exist to ensure your goods have been produced to their regulated specifications. (Meaning, all the flammable materials listed on the tag are properly sealed within the FR exterior.) The "penalty of law" portion is for manufacturers!

As the consumer, you may remove the tags from your purchase, but do be sure to save them in a junk drawer or something in the event that there is a recall. Sometimes you can "register" your new products with a warranty database and just toss them.
If you're going to remove them, be sure to cut- do not yank tags off! This ensures that you will not open the seams and compromise the saftey of your new sleepwear 🤓
