Woody’s Chair Shop is owned and operated by a family of chair makers that spans seven generations over 215 years. Located in the mountains of western North Carolina, this hand crafted chair business is the product of a culture steeped in a rich tradition of arts and crafts. Our hand made chairs are individually produced by an old Early American method passed down from each generation to the next.
Every step of production from harvesting the wood, milling and drying it, to hand turning each component, assembly, seating, and adding the finishing touches is done in-house. There are no screws, glue, or wedges used in the main structure of hardwoods that have been specifically air dried. The cherry, walnut, maple, ash, and oak we use are all selectively harvested from local sources with a mindset of resource conservation pioneered by our forefathers. The technique we employ is truly considered an original American craft, recognized by our country’s most distinguished institutions. We have examples in the Smithsonian Institute’s permanent craft collection, Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, and the Kennedy Presidential Library. The historical heritage of the Woody chair makers has also been featured in scores of media publications including National Geographic, Better Homes and Gardens, and Southern Living. Today, we receive orders from all around the world and frequently ship to international destinations in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Due to our labor intensive method of hand production, and because each chair is custom made to the customer’s order, a waiting list is not uncommon.
