I have been seeing this common theme of “empty space” coming up a lot with my clients. Misty, what do you mean “empty space”? So glad you asked allow me to explain. In this realm of organizing it is natural to go through the process of decluttering and pushing out items that are no longer serving our lives. In that process it is often normal to condense what is left and find yourself with a ton of empty space.

The brains first inclination is to fill that space back up, but I always encourage clients to sit with that empty space whether it be a whole shelf, closet, or even just kitchen drawer. Then if you choose to put something in that space, do it with intention, not because the empty space is uncomfortable to look at.

How do you feel about empty spaces in your home? Do you want to put something in it or do you enjoy just extra empty space?

I do not believe in New Year’s resolutions but do always look at a new year a fresh clean slate to begin again. This year I’ve intentionally slowed down and am being more present in moments, time with people and even just in what I buy. I have found in the slow down I have less need for things and more need for moments. The need for less things is often met with the need to declutter, of which I am always going to do!

If you are feeling even remotely the same as me but feel stuck on how to begin that decluttering process, reach out! Consults are free and I love helping others reclaim their spaces!

Virtual sessions are also an option as well!

Christmas is my favorite time of year that I love my home! I get caught up in the whimsical ways of the holiday. I go full throttle turning my home into a cozy Christmas wonderland.

Pulling out my Christmas items each year also forces me to take stock of my everyday decor I have. Everyday decor gets put away when I put my Christmas decor out. As I am making that switch I sometimes decide to completely get rid of some items. Why? Because they are no longer serving me and my space and it is time for them to move along to where they will be useful.

Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of “things” it’s a process of discovering what really speaks to you and deserves to take up precious real estate in your home!

As the holidays are quickly approaching it becomes easy to get lost in the chaos. This is oftentimes when our homes are somewhere in between looking like National Lampoons Christmas and a Martha Stewart double page spread in Better Homes and Gardens.

I know that what I’m about to say isn’t any kind of ancient wisdom from the saints of old, but it is helpful.

Create a plan with a list for how you want your holidays to go! This gets all those holly jolly ideas out of your head and resting easy on paper or a word doc if you’re tech savvy. 😉

Recruit others and share that plan, whether it be a spouse, kids, your mama or even just your nosey neighbor Fran. Including others helps with accountability to stay on track. Fran will be nosey, why not utilize that skill in keeping yourself on track by letting her know your plan, cause you know she’s gonna ask about it.

Maybe it’s obvious, but for the love of everything DO NOT, yes those caps were intended, compare your holiday joy to others! Embrace this season in all its wonder and find the beauty in it that speaks to you!

Do you struggle/or excel at any of these tips I listed? Or have any other thoughts/tips/words of encouragement to share with this community?

Sometimes getting organized does not require purging a lot of things. Sometimes it is just a matter of reworking them in the space you have for better accessibility!

We did not remove a lot of items out of this clients tiny closet but we did make it more functional!

I was working at a clients home yesterday and I was reminded of the simplicity of being organized. Sometimes getting organized is as simple as rearranging a couple cupboards not the whole kitchen. Sometimes simply changing up a few tiny spaces transforms a larger place for better functionality.

What’s one small place you could organize in your home that would make a big difference in the larger space it’s in?

Not sure who needs to hear this but, it’s ok if you don’t own all the fancy organizing supplies that tv organizers push! Quite frankly some of those items only work well in certain homes! Find what works best for you and your space and if you’re not sure, a Professional Organizer can help you!

Spring feels like it has finally arrived, or at least this sunshine has me feeling like it has! I always get the itch this time of year to either throw everything away or at minimum to deeply declutter and clean every crevice of my home!

What area of your house needs the most Spring cleaning this year?

I started going back to the gym last week. I was already frazzled cause it’s been a minute since I’ve been there. I’ve always kept my code to my combination lock for my locker in my phone case. As I was running out the door I realized I didn’t have the code in there and had no clue where I put it. Immediately I began running through all the places it might be… spoiler alert… it wasn’t in any of those places.

So I still went to the gym but as I was driving there I thought “I’ll just buy another lock it’s no big deal.” But quite frankly it is a big deal because I already have one, I like that lock, the code for it is fairly simple even if my brain couldn’t remember those numbers at that moment and I don’t want another lock laying around my house.

I also had this thought. Most of the time I see clients homes that are cluttered because they keep buying stuff they already have but have lost due to lack of proper organization. This was my case as well. I did not store that paper in a proper place and it was pushing me to have to possibly go buy it again.

I eventually found it after saying a prayer asking God where it was at because he can see everything and I can’t. Ha it was in my old purse that I had been using when I was going to the gym.

And really the moral of this story, quit buying things you already have. Take the time to organize them in a way that they are easily accessible. Even utilize labels, which are huge help for those who are not visually oriented.

It may be hot outside but this is the perfect time to tackle your basement! This family just moved into this home and hired me to make sense of the basement while they tackled other areas!

This will eventually be a full on kids space but for now I created an area that they can utilize!
