Just finished up a Shaker Wall Cabinet that is a wedding gift for some of our good friends in Spokane. The design is pretty simple (and not my own), but it allowed me to dial in the fundamentals and experiment with some new techniques.

This piece has a mushroom pull that rotates to engage or disengage a catch at the back. I also utilized sawtooth shelf supports for an old school look. Solid cherry and finished with 3 coats of boiled linseed oil.

Before Washington State was order to shelter in place, I went to my hardwood lumber year and picked up some walnut for a very special table for some extra special people. We’ve all got our priorities.

This is my take on a Parsons table (named for Parsons School of Design) and it is destined for the home of Hugh and Daisy Chapman just as soon as it is safe to deliver it. Hugh and Daisy are some of my favorite people in Spokane and were even kind enough to care for me when I was recovering from surgery back in 2014 while Andi was away on fellowship.

This piece was a bit like woodworking origami because both the ends and the sides are cut to let the grain wrap continuously around the sides and end. All of the pieces are ¾” thick and solid walnut. The legs intersect the top in a triple miter. It has a bit of mid-century vibe.

Several folks were kind enough to send me birthday greetings on Tuesday. I’m grateful for the web of relationships that I am apart of and look forward to the day when the hugs are no longer virtual. Take care everybody, we all depend on and need each other.

I had several friends request nativity sets this year and I've made a small run of them that are now available for sale. The price is $75 which includes shipping and tax. I can ship internationally, provided you are willing to vouch for me on any asylum claims I may or may not have in the future. As in years past, these are made out of Baltic Birch and include a sturdy storage box. Message me (John) if you are interested. Thanks!

Turned a pile of scraps into a chair over the Labor Day weekend. Design inspired by Chris Schwarz’s staked backstool. Learned lots and made simply for the joy of making it.

I've been a little quiet on my Wood for Good Feed for a while - I've quickly discovered I'm a better woodworker than a contributor to Facebook, however, I had a very enjoyable trip to Samish Island in western Washington to deliver a table made from repurposed church pews. Here are a few images from the trip and of the table.

This year’s crop of nativity sets are finished and ready to be released into the wild. This year I will be donating 10% of the profits to World Relief Spokane for the work they do to resettle refugees and immigrants in Spokane. No organization is perfect, but I’m appreciative of their efforts. There is always room at the inn in Spokane and welcoming the stranger makes our world better.

The new shop dog, Fairbanks, may or may not be responsible for a missing baby Jesus figure. Order early before he kidnaps more and I recover them in the back yard.

If you are interested here are the details:

Each boxed set is $50 + $13.60 shipping. WA state sales tax applies to WA state residents. Private message me if you are interested and include your shipping address. I will send you a Paypal Invoice link that you can use to pay by your preferred electronic means. Once you pay, I will give it to my wiry mail carrier named W***y who will get it to you just as quickly as the laws of physics and 2-Day Priority Mail allow. Thanks for your interest!

Around this time of year nativity sets begin to emerge from my shop. It’s the rhythm of the season, not that I want Christmas to begin prematurely, but it reminds me of the people who I have made these for over the years. That makes me smile.

These will be ready to ship out in about two weeks and I’ll post more when they are finished. As in years past these will be $50.00 + $13.60 shipping anywhere in the U.S. WA State Sales tax applies to those lucky enough to live in Washington.

I’ll donate 10% of the profits to a worthy cause that makes the world and our communities better – I’ve got a list and I’m still narrowing it down. Let me know if you are interested.

Not just any load of lumber. These are a couple of deconstructed church pews I picked up from Samish Island this weekend. The plan is to transform these into a new trestle table for the kitchen at Samish.

Every once and a while there is a really unique project that comes along. This is cart I build for the music thanatologists at Sacred Heart here in Spokane so they could move their harp around the hospital. Crafted out of cherry and finished with an oil urethane blend.

After some vacation time and adoption of a new shop dog, things are picking up steam in the wood shop. This is a six drawer flat file in cherry w/baltic birch drawers. The drawers are sized to hold 11 x 17" prints/drawings and look spiffy. The construction is inspired by a piece I repurposed a few years ago. Finished in old school boiled linseed oil. Measures 21"W x 14"D x 15" H
