The NCDOT team continues its work in Burnsville, NC, with extensive recovery efforts underway after the hurricane. Trey and Conor constructed a boulder wall to increase the road shoulder's width, allowing for guardrail relocation and road expansion. Although the road was completely washed out and rapidly restored for traffic by DOT, further stabilization and widening were essential.

The latest NCDOT project is now complete, featuring the construction of a substantial structure measuring 24 feet wide, 14 feet high, and 72 feet long, with expansive headwalls spanning 65 feet wide and 18 feet tall. This structure replaces one that was overwhelmed and destroyed by last year's floodwaters. Prior to its construction, a two-week cleanup effort was undertaken to clear the stream bed and floodplain beneath the old structure, which involved removing 57 stone that had filled the channel up to 3 feet deep and 800 feet downstream, amounting to around 90 quad dump truck loads of material.

Gunn Poole #1
NCDOT culvert replacement, started this culvert replacement on Oct 30th with silt fence installation and removing a section of collapsed culvert to allow the stream to flow. Most of the work kicked in the first week of November, including getting the old stone & soil out of the channel 600’ below the culvert, which was approximately 40 Quad axle dump truck loads or 800tons to the landfill.
But the most dramatic change took place this last week, started with a flooded footing Monday morning to installed headwalls by the end of the day, crew came on Tuesday to built the double barrel culvert structure, backfill started on Wednesday & by Friday 11/21 the road bed is almost to grade for asphalt. Not to mention we had three other projects going on that had crews stretched.
This structure is 63 feet long with with 11’ tall squash culverts and 63’ headwalls. Yes the pipe is designed that shape it allows for larger flow with less cover over the culvert being shaped that way. The only issue is you have to pack stone under the arches at the bottom that go almost to the center line of each pipe. After a lot of pushing rock with shovel handles, some sore shoulders and elbows we got it done.

Culvert Replacement for NCDOT 12’ diameter, 81’ long, with 50’ wide head walls. One side of this project is over 30’ deep with no room to ramp in due to private drive & fiber cables on both sides of the road alignment, the other side is over 20’ deep but was able to ramp down between the fiber cables. Culvert is ready for backfill starting next week.
