I got it all cleaned up, repaired, painted, re-lit with LED lights. Thankfully, all of the major tools and machinery were fine and mostly what I lost were small hand tools and mementos collected over the years. Because it was winter, I fired up the wood stove the next morning and the moisture from the relatively small amount of water the FD used condensed on anything cold, so virtually every single item ( inside cabinets, inside drawers, inside machines) or surface was either covered with soot or rusty or both. Here's how it looks today. There's a little '64 Vespa almost done with a full restoration, some Ipe deck railing parts being milled up and the usual layer of fine dust on everything.

Friday morning at the start of the storm, I saw smoke blowing past the window from inside the house.... at first I thought it was fog...nope, it was from the shop....Cheap battery in the Makita charge set off a box of dry rags, then the oil in the compressor leaked out and the tires burned until the fire ran out of oxygen. There is soot on everything in the shop , even inside the cabinets and drawers. Fortunately, I only lost a handful of cordless tools and smaller stuff on the desk and shelves like router bits and chisels. The fire was out when the FD arrived and they were, thankfully, considerate about their use of water. Now for the Ins Co and what they might cover...... Watch out for cheap batteries and put all your chargers where they won't cause something like this ! The warning on Lithium batteries is real...

Here is the stump of the Ash I had cut down recently. The cut part measures 46". I started investigating the root structure and it is amazing. The rippled grain on top indicates some interesting material below but somehow I hate to cut it up. I might just keep excavating.

Last week, I had Terrapin Tree Care of Pleasantville, NY. take down an 85' Ash tree next to my house. It was a very pleasurable experience and their care for my property and safety was evident in their work. Lauren Coats, her brother Dave, and the crew did a great job and when it was done, there was virtually no evidence of what had occurred that day other than the stump cut at ground level..
As a bonus, I retained some really beautiful material for the lathe.

To demonstrate the process, I wanted a small , portable lathe that didn't rely on 110v power. I bought a cheap little Harbor Freight lathe and gave some thought to the Singer treadle table I had kicking around, but went with a Razor Scooter motor and it's 24v rechargeable batteries. The stock motor came out with it's speed control wiring and the the Razor motor lined right up using the original pulley turned around on the shaft as well as the stock belt. I had to cut a slot in the frame for the belt and I added a hand wheel to the shaft. I found a DC speed controller online and mounted all the wiring inside the frame with a safety switch in case someone twiddles the k**b. Total cost : $165 and it weighs 45lbs. I turned these three little vessels before the battery ran down, so using it for short demo sessions it should last all day. Or another set of batteries.
