A tatami space in Port Orford Cedar we finished last year. The shoji screens open to the master bedroom creating a tranquil space for yoga or meditation, or can be closed to create a guest room for visitors.

Shoji in Port Orford Cedar divide this living space from the Genkan, softening the natural light. Genkans are one of the most under-rated features in japanese architecture, in the states. The entryway is lower than the main level to keep dirt contained. The spaces are minimalist with typically only a cabinet for shoes/room slippers, but are an aesthetic highlight for guests entering the home.

Neat little shelving unit in Cherry. We used the Kigoroshi technique for the through joinery on this piece. For this technique, you use a hammer to compress the fibers on the tenons to fit through the mortise, and the joint locks together mechanically after they swell back. You can also check out the little@blue shoes referenced in the last post about my trip to Japan. They’re made of washi and indigo dyed by the master washi maker I studied with. They’re made for a babies first steps.

The ginkgo leaf is the symbol of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony. We had these ginkgo leaf “handles” custom made by a local carving specialist for the shoji screens and mizuya cabinet doors in this tea room space. Really happy with how these turned out, and how they accentuate the space in a functional and aesthetic way.

Ikigai - Brooklyn NY

An outdoor garden space with a traditional Japanese architectural feel to enjoy a cocktail and snacks while waiting for your space inside the restaurant. The post and beam millwork feature shoji screens, made from Western Red Cedar, which open to reveal a lovely garden. Acrylic panels, imported from Japan, take the place of paper to offer durability from the elements. The space also features stucco walls with materials imported from japan for a traditional plaster aesthetic.
