When I'm not sure what direction I want to go with a piece, I do a couple of things:

β€’ Look at similar pieces I painted and see if I want to repeat (shades of blue, for instance)

β€’ Sand sections to see what the raw wood looks like

β€’ Try something new or from a long time ago (paint it all black or dark blue)

This 2 piece vintage buffet with hutch is one of those pieces. Initially, I wanted it all sanded down like the coffee bar I refinished for my hairdresser so I tackled 3 drawers. The grain is so wonky ~ different colors, uneven planes, shadows from the previous batwing handles. Even a white or gray wash wouldn't cover that.

I looked at my sample paint boards and spotted Fusion Little Lamb. Not a dark gray as you'd expect from the name, but a soft medium gray. I applied it to 2 drawers. Now my brain clicked into overdrive. I see crystal k***s and romantic handles against the gray. I see a pretty fabric backing on the hutch top.

Every piece is special. Each one deserves a thoughtful process. Now, I'm excited!

My beach house ⛱️ sign is up for grabs!

I found the board (actually there were four and I bought two), at my local thrift store. Brand new with a rope hanger. I added some swipes of white and seafoam to brighten the board then stenciled "beach house" onto it. It looked a little lonely so I thought hydrangea transfers would be pretty and they are! Added a real starfish. Sealed it with multiple coats of polycrylic.

Measures 26" x 12" x ΒΌ" thick.

**The colors take on a different hue against different walls or doors and light.

I have a section of my booth at Coastal Charm Marketplace for seasonal clothing. The rack is filled with beachy tshirts (beach happy logo), long sleeveless dresses, and lightweight cotton dresses. There's also some men's swimsuits, shorts + a Harley-Davidson T-shirt.

My mannequin is wearing a vintage CHAPS plaid robe with black velvet collar.

This is why I make over furniture. 🎨

The original dark finish doesn't bring anything to the table. Well, ok, in this case it actually did because the person selling it used it as a dining room bench when more seating was needed. πŸ˜† But seriously...

Once I saw the pretty wood beneath the brown, I was all in. I timed myself to see how long the process would take. To sand the top, the edge and the 16 planes of the legs, it took me 90 minutes. Not bad considering I used 120 grit and 220 to smooth it out.

I haven't added anything to the top yet. No grain sack stripes, no seahorse stencil, not even polycrylic to seal it. That's for tomorrow. It's kinda fabulous the way it is.

The apron color, GLASS, is from a brand called recolor. Recolor Paints is a Massachusetts-based company that reprocesses leftover paint into new, environmentally friendly products for home, office, and commercial use, with a mission to reduce paint waste. They collect unwanted paint from various sources, screen it, and create their own brand of interior, exterior, and chalk finish paints, which are sold through partners like Habitat for Humanity ReStores and other retailers. I picked my chalk paint up at the Habitat Restore in Wilmington.

Interested? Measurements are in the collage.

Today's QUESTION!!

As you watch, think about why I've only sanded the top/trim half way. Two possible answers! GO!!

Oh, I'm using 120 grit then I'll go finer and finer to get it silky smooth.

Finished this hand-crafted early American solid pine slant front writing desk today. I picked it up Wednesday at The Master's Touch of Sneads Ferry. Decided to sand the top entirely to raw wood to eliminate the scratches and uneven finish then used three shades of Dixie Belle Voodoo Gel Stain. Used Reβ€’store chalk paint in the color River. Added some soft yellow floral transfers and sealed it with multiple coats of polycrylic for durability.

Available for purchase.
Now I'm floating in the pool. Hope everyone is enjoying their Father's Day!
