Like every other good idea I have these holiday-themed charcuterie boards were actually Patsy’s idea. After making one and getting her approval, I made this set as presents for our family. These are walnut and maple, about 16-18” at their widest points.

The black dye has dried and it’s time to part the finial off the blank, then test fit in the ornament globe. The globe will also get a top cap dyed to match the finial.

Working on a set of ornaments in maple burl. The finials are turned in plain maple dyed black. Once the dye dries the finial will be cut off the blank to which it’s still attached here, then glued into the ornament globe. The globes are hollowed to make them lightweight so they don’t bend the branch when hung on the tree. Each globe will also be topped with a cap dyed to match the finial.

Turned a small ladle spoon just to check out the process. Start by mounting and turning a blank lengthwise (long-grain to shape the handle and form a solid sphere on one end. Then make a jig to hold the piece vertically with the sphere at the center of rotation and the handle sticking outward. This is where the video begins. Then hollow out the sphere to form the bowl of the spoon…then you’re done!

Salt & Pepper shakers. Thanks to .tomasic_woodturner for this idea. They are based on an ancient form sometimes called mystery shakers. The mystery is that salt (or pepper) will not spill from the single opening in the bottom unless you shake it up and down.

The video shows the exciting moment when you’re trying to make a large ring-shape on a lathe from a solid board. I slowed the video down for the most interesting part. Looks like a disaster but actually all part of the plan. After that, some steel buttons from were very handy for securing the ring back on the lathe so I could turn the finished shape onto the front side of the mirror. Swipe to see the finished product.

It’s been several months since I lasted posted from the shop. Here’s why: the first video shows the condition of my shop in June. We had just moved to a new home a few weeks earlier and all tools were in pieces and lost in the stacks of storage boxes. The other video and pics show the new current state including a lathe station, mobile table saw, and a miter saw station (although those cabinets are not leveled yet. Most of the shop activity has been related to getting our home set up, but I’ve also got back to turning a couple of bowls.

Turned a knitting bowl for a friend with a very specific criteria. The bowl needed to discourage his very curious cat who was prone to chasing the ball of yarn while he tried to knit. So I made the bowl deep enough to hold the ball and added a lid. In order to achieve the depth I wanted I had to glue a piece of cherry to this otherwise perfect piece of spalted maple from . The cherry is from my friends at . I decided to turn the top from the same cherry. Thanks to my friend for providing the two pics of his bowl actually in use. I hope there is a frustrated cat lying nearby.
