The people cheering for humanity’s end

A disparate group of thinkers says we should welcome our demise.

Just a quick update here. The shop and property are under contract to close on dec 9. I am in process of packing and moving the things I want to keep.

I still have the house my dad left me and plan to keep that for now and move the stuff I want to keep there. It’s bittersweet and hard to let go honestly but I couldn’t say no to the final offer price because I felt stuck and stagnating here in shell k**b. I look forward to making a fresh start towards getting a property where I want to be and finding a partner or two to build on the property.

I don’t know where that is yet exactly or who it involves but it will involve some continuation of what my father started. I want to focus also on sustainable living, building and food production. I’m open to all serious discussions that lead me in this direction.

I am wondering if there is anyone who can help me with the move of the contents in the shop to my residence in shell k**b or knows of anyone in the area who can help. I’ll pay 15 an hour cash.

It’s been a pretty good but gradual run of sales this summer since I put the sign up by the road.

The store / sale is still happening. If you don’t see me there call the number on the sign to make an appointment. I plan to be here in the area till mid September.

Last week Mary and Scott Hamilton came by to look in the “gallery hut.” They are from Topeka but have a place in shell k**b. They mentioned that they has bought some of my Dads work before including “the Four Sisters”. They purchased one of my Dads art pieces that they liked of which he had done different versions of in the past. I asked if they could send pictures of the Four Sisters and The Spiral Donut one as well…so here they are.

If you have any pictures of my dad or his art or stories to share of your time with him please send me and I will post it here.

Here is one of my favorites that I worked on my dad with in his last period of work before convalescing in the fall of 2017. A lot of work sanding this piece and the form of all those intersecting branches is what you can only get from juniper cedar. Cedar was burnished giving it the blackened look then sanded oiled and polished.

There is also a saying from Emerson etched on the back.

“What lies before us and behind us are tiny matters compared to what lies within.”

Ken Foggo of the Eurekan Studio and Studio in Eureka Springs came by recently and bought a bunch of items for his gallery. In the process of going through some of my inventory and also his freeing me up from too much inventory, I was able to reorganize and streamline the Alex Buderer “tiny house gallery”. Next up is to put a coat of wax and start polishing up the items to get them looking stunning.

There is serious interest in the property and I think it will sell and I will move in next two months. Once a deal is finalized the sales will end and I will focus on moving stuff out. So if there is something you think might want now is the time to come by.

I will most likely only have 45 days from now to vacate the property. If the sale goes through I will try to get 3 months if possible because there are many things I do want to keep. However most of the items I will have to let go include most of the slabs and wood. What I keep will be transferred over to the "firehouse" 1 1/2 miles down the road on Royle Point and stored there temporarily until I purchase another property.

I also have someone lined up to consider purchase of the wood slabs as a bulk deal of pretty much my (most) entire stock who is coming by later this week.

We'll see how it all goes. I am excited and nervous.

Come by and see me one last time at the Workshop and see all the cool stuff there before it goes to another owner.

A big piece of great news came late in the day yesterday when I received word that I actually had access and rights to well water for the workshop property.

Wells are pretty pricey in these parts as drilling can be difficult because of the rocky karst geology.

So basically because I have well rights it adds about 5-10,000 dollars to the value of the property!

However the stress of considering the sale of the property weighs the good news down. I have two parties interested in the contents and the property so I have to come up with a number. I plan to keep some things but I realized that the magnitude of the contents on the property coupled with my needing to move to a new place was too overwhelming for me. I feel I have grown too attached to the stuff he left me and detaching from that will be a difficult process for me emotionally.

I made a little altar / memorial at the shop this last week…Paul Williams ran a lumber mill where my dad got a lot his wood …. so he made a heart in honor of him. And that’s me in the picture on the dozer helping dad preparing the property the shop sits on.

Mike Lenz came by and bought a few slabs the other day. We did a mantle installation at his house about ten years back.

This has definitely been a bittersweet experience in dealing with all the stuff that’s been left to me and the struggling with the decisions revolving around that but It’s been great to reconnect with the folks around here who were touched with my dad and his work. I’m always surprised at how many he touched in the area through his work and presence.

Most of the stuff that’s sold in terms of dollar amount and quantity has been the wood stuff: the wood slabs a few bases and the finished bowls crosses and utensils.

I Set another fire after chipping up the smaller stuff for mulch and the larger wood for firewood along the wood line by the highway that fronts the property.

I try to minimize the wood I burn to keep my carbon footprint low. However the occasional burns are a small ritual for me. It signifies my progress purging and paring down the tremendous accumulation of stuff that I inherited. Part of that involves rebirth regeneration and renewal and my effort to find a new path while still taking some of what my dad created with me. It is part of the sacred dance of life that we’re all a part in one way or form.
