Something we don’t advertise very much is our capability to produce top tier exterior trim. This exterior crown (CO5 in our catalogue) made of vertical grain fir is stunning. Fir is great for exterior uses because of its resistance to rot and decay. We strive for excellence in everything we do and exterior trim is no different.

Big things happening today! Welcoming our newest addition to the shop. This is a tub grinder for our scrap wood. This piece of equipment allows us to not only reduce our waste, but will keep us in the fast lane which in turn keeps your millwork in the fast lane. Growth necessitates a continual refining process and evolution of the way you do things. The same boiling water that softens the potato gardens the egg.

African Mahogany super wide jambs. Where’s the glue seam? Grain matching looks like a simple process, but especially with exotic woods it can be very tricky and goes beyond just picking boards with similar grain patterns. In addition to grain pattern, you need to consider depth of shades and subtle hues and make sure to check for imperfections like tiny cracks and knots. These turned out great and we’re excited to get them to and see the final product!

Casing with integrated back band. Casing and back band are two trim components that go hand in hand. The casing is wider, and the back band sits on top of the casing, providing depth and dimension to the overall profile. Over time, with moisture and temperature fluctuations, a small, visible seam between the casing and back band can develop. One possible solution is to integrate the two components into one piece. If you would like a sample, or would like to set up a tour of our shop, DM for details.

Many of the projects we undertake at Trademark have non-standard board lengths exceeding the available lengths for the species required for their projects. In some cases, a glue joint is the appropriate solution to achieve these longer lengths. This is often seen with box beams and stair skirt boards. The solution we have found for beams or skirt boards that will be painted or stained a dark color is a long diagonal joint which allows for a longer, uniform glue surface that will provide more stability to the joint and allows for a straight, seamless surface that, once finished is almost imperceptible.

Sometimes we get a request that exceeds the scope and capability of our moulders and we need to do things the old fashioned way with glue, router bits and a can do attitude. It’s becoming more and more rare to find people with the knowledge and skill set necessary to not only make these corbels and custom trim pieces, but to make them by hand and have them turn out perfect. Here at we are both honored and grateful to have talented craftsmen who have the old school knowledge to make difficult pieces by hand and make it look easy.

Let’s talk different types of Tongue and Groove (T&G), particularly Shiplap and V-Groove. While similar, there are some important distinctions. Shiplap has a square tongue and a flat face. It also goes by the common term Nickel Gap because the gaps between each board are 1/8 of an inch, roughly the width of the American Nickel. V-Groove typically has a rounded tongue and an angled chamfer cut on both edges. Fun fact, before the advent of mass produced plywood and other roofing products, V-Groove was used as roofing substrate beneath the roof’s shingles. Today T&G is popular both inside and outside. Pictured is D-Grade cedar (darker wood) and #2 Gorman Pine (lighter wood). The last picture shows what a difference finishing can make. A clear or light stain/finish can really make the grain pop and add depth and dimension to the finished product. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Link in bio.

At Trademark we are constantly refining and adjusting our processes to meet the needs of our clients as well as our own internal needs so that we can keep you in the fast lane. One example is the choice in grit of sandpaper. If you are priming your trim, the primer you use may require a look at the grit of sandpaper we would use. For an oil-based primer our standard 150 grit will give you the desired finish when you apply your primer. If you are using a water-based primer, that tends to raise the grain and a 220 grit may be a more appropriate choice.
