I decided I wanted a challenge, so I took a look at Michael Cheshire's work and found a really fantastic pattern I wanted to recreate.

This was an "angle challenge" more than anything.

I sized it around 12" overall and used three different wood types.

What do you think?

Cheers!

About a week ago, a fantastic client contacted me and asked if I had the ability to carve a 3D copy of the Canterbury Cross in solid oak. After doing a bit of research and getting the dimensions he was looking for, I felt this was a real challenge and since I love doing a bit of wood-carving I jumped at the offer!

I chose a VERY old piece of white oak and used my CNC router to basically act as a template and trace out the rough pattern and from there used hand tools to finish the cross.

The 1st picture I posted is an image of the original cross, found in the rubble of St. Georges street in Canterbury in 850AD. The remainder of the pics show my finished project - measuring six inches in diameter and approx 3/4" thick. It has an inset hanger on the back to be able to hang flush on a wall.

It was picked up today and the client was overjoyed. :-)

Cheers!

This is a quick update/addition to my last post. I was able to make a rare housecall and do the actual install of the finial on top of the cabinet, so I snapped a couple of pics.

It matches perfectly and looks fantastic!

Client was very pleased.

Cheers!

I received a call from a client a few days ago asking if I could create a finial that attaches to the top of an antique dining room cabinet that was left in a house they recently purchased. The cabinet looks fantastic, with the exception of the finial, located top center. The spot obviously looks like it's missing something.

Together, we researched the cabinet and found a few duplicates from the early 1950's that pretty much matched the piece they have - and they showed a few different finials. Looks like they were pretty much hand turned back then and all differed from one to another. The client picked one they really liked and had me create one like it.

Let me say I LOVE spindle turning on my lathe! I don't get to do it much but when I do there's nothing more relaxing and fulfilling than creating such intricate woodwork using a lathe and turning tools.

Here's the finial at about 90% complete. I love the cherry now that it's been polished! The wood grain is magnificent and should match their cabinet fairly well. :-)

Cheers!

Over the past year I've gotten well over two dozen clients asking if I would make a few simple cuts to a piece of lumber or molding they bought at a big box store. One was framing out a window in their townhouse and just needed the pieces cut to length.

I said "of course" to all the requests - a quick job usually done while they waited and usually accepted whatever they offered as payment. I got to meet a lot of nice folks that way!

It finally dawned on me that nobody has tools to do this kind of work in their houses any more! Makes sense as most people live in apartments or townhouses with no space to store anything - let alone an outbuilding or shop. So, I'll keep saying "of course" to these kind of requests and get to meet all kinds of wonderful folk!

Thanks for putting up with my wandering thoughts!

Cheers!

Although this is "The WoodWorks", I don't only work on wood........

I was asked by a very close client to make a gift for her music teacher and we came up with this design. It took two vinyl 12" records (don't worry, they were considered quite unplayable) - one solid one painted white and one I cut out the silloutte of a drum set. The teacher loved it!

Cheers!

Most recent cutting board order - this one is a BIG BOY! Dimensions are 13x24 and over 1 1/4 thick solid walnut.

It features a strip of solid cherry as an accent and solid cherry inlayed words in lower right corner.

I LOVE doing wooden inlays - very fun but detailed work.

Cheers!

It's been quite a while since I posted here - partly being very busy and partly just a bad memory......... sorry!

About a month ago, the head brewer at McGuires Irish Pub in Pensacola, Florida contacted me. In 2021 they ordered a Mash Paddle and have used it daily - they state over 500 brew sessions. As you can see, it was a tad "used" looking, but still going strong!

As they knew it would eventually wear out, they ordered two more from me (the 2nd one will be given to the brewer at their second location).

Here are pics of the old and new paddles - quite the difference!

BTW, if you are ever in the Pensacola or Destin, stop in at https://www.mcguiresirishpub.com I hear their beer is FANTASTIC!

Cheers!
