Sorry for the shadowy photo! This picture showcases about a quarter of the entire path that winds through the jungly back yard of this house. Large reclaimed chunks of broken concrete and Craigslist-free river rock are mosaic-ed in a flow of concrete to make this level yet flowing path.

This little gate had to bet custom-made to fit in the extra-narrow space on the side of the house. The section of fence necessary to meet with the gate was designed to match the existing fence.

A bunch of little projects went into this side garden. Upper is another raised cedar bed. Lower are some cedar retaining walls finished with a Shou Sugi Ban technique- a traditional Japanese method of charring wood to help resist rot while creating a lovely black sheen. Between the black walls I built a little path from bricks and pavers found on site.

This little project was a "save" on some broken drainage pipes that were causing backyard flooding. Building a sort of shallow well gave a cheap and pleasant-looking fix so that the rest of the yard was dry enough to p[lay in.

Another before and after shot, with a close up on the porch. Because of the street orientation changing sometime in the neighborhood's past, this house had its side to the street. After removing the awkwardly placed shrubbery, I built this faux front porch to make it look more like the front of a house. Also put in shutters and a window box around the window, and paved the driveway with re-claimed bricks found on site.

These garden beds (3 in total)are 5X11 feet and made from cinder blocks covered in mortar and treated with an acid stain to create an antiqued finish. Red brick pavers were found on site and used for between-bed paths. Higher beds like these are easier on the back and knees to tend. Black bamboo bean trellis also made by myself.

Before and after shots of a corner terrace re-do. Retaining walls were disassembled (except in that one slany area you can see in the "after" photo, which was concreted in place), and then reassembled with a minimum of new material. Soil was lightly amended and now it sports a thriving garden.
