One last look at the “faux” beams we recently made for a client!
For those curious...
The 2”x10” reclaimed rough sawn lumber we used to construct these “beams” came from our lumber division, (on Instagram) where the client was able to hand pick pieces at our indoor lumberyard!
Our craft team then built the faux beam wrap, all 16+ feet of it, along with the vertical support beams and corner bracing in our shop mocking them up with temporary inserts for later transport. Obsessive attention was spent on carefully mitering the corners and thoughtfully aligning each piece of lumber for a cohesive, flowing and most importantly, natural looking build. Featuring rough sawn marks, rich old growth grain and 100+ years of weather worn patina, highlighted by a coat of High Performance finish in “flat” to retain that beautiful natural appearance without a glossy sheen.
Our install team then transported it to the clients’ home and began work by securing an insert track to the ceiling, making sure to hit worthy structural supports along the entire length. This is what the beam wrap is attached to, hidden away on the inside. The team then trimmed beam lengths right there on site, assuring a precision fit and install. The beams were then carefully brought in through a window and the team snugged the faux beam wrap to the support track starting on one side and snaking it along to the other. They then secured it in place with trim screws sunk into the face and hidden away from sight.
Next came the vertical beams, secured using the same track insert techniques as the ceiling beam, but this time secured into the walls on each side. The angled corner supports, also fabricated from 2x10’s milled down, mitered and joined on all 4 sides to form “faux by 4’s” are installed last and secured in place with trim screws sunk beneath the face of the boards, essentially leaving no visible marks for a clean natural finish.
The results certainly speak for themselves even if the pictures don’t quite do this install justice. It’s easy to believe no would assume this is a faux beam without deep inspection, and even then it very well trick most eyes.
We can’t wait to see pictures when the client finishes the rest of their remodel!
