This client, located in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, was happy with the general layout of their kitchen, but wanted to update everything else. The desk area was underutilized (a common critique), the cabinets and countertops were degrading, storage was not organized efficiently, and there were several architectural design elements that needed improvement.
We started by streamlining the countertop work spaces by eliminating the awkward wall partitions, and creating more functional (and beautiful) storage. We added a beautiful bay window at the sink, a long-time dream for the client. We eliminated the arched valances and openings, instead cladding the post and ceiling transition in wood more befitting of timber elements elsewhere in the home.
The cabinets are a mixture of rustic hickory with a stain and highlight, and maple with an espresso finish. Hickory, a gorgeous wood featuring wild color variations, is a client (and designer) favorite, and this stain/highlight combination helped to maintain the wood’s beautiful characteristics – just muted a bit. The countertops, a leathered granite, provide beautiful movement and texture, and a simple backsplash and sophisticated hardware tie it all together.
