David J. Marks Woodworking School

David J. Marks Woodworking School Our school offers both hands on group classes in woodworking and woodturning, as well as private classes.

Visit the Classes Section of my website www.djmarks.com to view my list of hands on group classes for 2019: http://djmarks.com/classes/2019-classes-hands-on-group-classes/ GROUP CLASSES: Each class will have 3 - 10 students and will be held in David's Workshop/Studio in Santa Rosa, California. PRIVATE CLASSES: David offers private classes which provide one-on-one instruction. The advantage of the

private class is that it is completely tailored to suit your individual skill level, interests, and needs. In addition, there is more flexibility in scheduling dates for one-on-one class sessions which can range from one day to five days. You can pick any subject or subjects to focus on, such as bandsawn veneers, bentwood lamination, wood turning, dovetails, double-bevel marquetry, sharpening hand tools, wood carving, gold leafing, patinas on metal, working with the vacuum press, working with commercial veneers, fixing mistakes, design elements, etc. The class takes place in David’s workshop/studio in which he taped the television show "Woodworks"

Last night at Midnight 🕛 , I suggested to Victoria that we take a stroll through our garden and check out some of the new lights that I put up.
I found some 66 foot Luminar solar string/rope lights at Harbor Freight for only 20 bucks and they have a good size panel that stores the energy and keeps them lit all night.

Yesterday (5/26/26) I picked up my Scarab Vessel from the Museum of Sonoma's "Artistry in Wood Show" and today I packaged and shipped it to the Messler Gallery at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine for their "Faculty Show". A friend asked me what type of box I would use to prevent it from getting damaged during shipping. I told him about the cardboard Sono tubes used for concrete forms and how well they work for shipping wood turnings. I turn plywood lids with rabbet cuts and glue the bottoms on with 5 minute epoxy and the top is a friction fit which I hold on with packing tape. I line the inside with thin foam insulation and newspaper. The vessel is carefully wrapped in tissue paper and then wrapped again in newspaper. The key is that I pack my art pieces in one container and then pack that into a second larger container. It's a fair amount of work but so far I have had no damaged pieces from using that method

March 5th,2026, I hosted a meeting at my Shop/School/Art Studio for the Sonoma County Woodworkers group and my old friend Jaime Rivera captured it on video.
Jaime has taken classes at my school, one on gilded metals with patinas and one on Shell inlay with my buddy and guest teacher, Larry Robinson Custom Inlays. Jaime recently decided to create video content about the artists and musicians that live here in Wine Country and hopefully make the world a better place for it. He is also a very talented musician and you can learn more about him through his website :

Please like and share the content and I will post more as time permits.
There is a part 2 to my presentation on Gilding and Patinas coming soon!
Thanks for watching!

I’m getting set up for my demo tomorrow evening at 7:00 for the Sonoma County Woodworkers meeting.
I will be gilding 3 sample boards, one with Silver leaf, one Copper and one Composition Gold. Next I will mix chemicals and create patinas.
My wall sculpture “Gold Fusion” composed of 4 different types of genuine gold leaf will be on display.
There will be plenty of samples to talk about as I work and I will answer questions as I go.
If you are interested in becoming a member, this will be a good opportunity to attend a meeting and learn about the group.

Sally Ault demonstrated her skills for our Wine Country WoodTurners Association yesterday. Sally drove up from San Diego and her energy and enthusiasm filled the room. There were smiles all around. Sally shared with us her favorite "chattering" tool which she made and demonstrated on one of her delightful tops that she is so well known for turning. She also turned a natural edge bowl in the afternoon and showed us how she does wood burning on the edge of another one.
Mike Weeks showed up with a popcorn cart and refreshments and coffee were plentiful.
Thank you Sally for sharing your knowledge and talents with us!

I recently had a 3 day hollow vessel turning class with Bob Lee who is the President of the Long Island Woodturners Association. Bob took a group bowl turning class with me back in 2019 and then scheduled a private class with me this April. His goal was to focus on hollow vessel turning as well as learn to hand chase threads. Bob made a full scale drawing in advance and I milled up some African Blackwood as well as some Olivewood to practice on.
Bob did a great job and he just posted this write up with photos and a link to my David J. Marks Woodworking School page :

A Maple burl hollow vessel with a base made of ebony and a turned threaded insert at the top made of African Blackwood. A lid made of African Blackwood with threaded plug and a top made from Maple burl. Finished with Arm-r-seal. 8” high 5-1/2” diameter. Piece made as part of a class with David marks at the David J. Marks Woodworking School where I first learned to turn and returned to try and breakthrough a plateau. Two photos in a light box make it look more orange than it is. Resting on a slice of unfinished maple burl from same piece used to make cap.
