Between the 11th and 18th centuries, the Republic of Dubrovnik (originally known as the Republic of Ragusa) and the Republic of Venice were fierce competitors as each struggled to gain leverage over the other in terms of military might and domination of Adriatic trade routes. Though perhaps not as well known as the old Jewish Quarter of Seville, the “judería” in the historic center of Córdoba is equally as stunning, and, in some ways, even more interesting from a historic perspective since it predates Seville’s “Barrio de Santa Cruz”. It was also the birthplace of the great Jewish scholar, philosopher and physician, Maimonides, and was an international center of learning in Al-Andalús well before Seville.

In the 10th century, the city of Córdoba was not only the largest city in Europe and the capital of Al-Andalús, but it was also perhaps the spiritual and intellectual center of the Western World.
