Our First Shop

Deanna and I built this shop from scratch..just the two of us..during the height of Covid on nights & weekends while still holding down our day jobs.

Even though we did not have any work established yet..we were driven to get something set up for when the time came..we were ready.

It took a few months after acquiring this shop to sell our first kitchen cabinet build.

It was that one project I knew would require my full attention and decided then and there to quit my day job and give this business a shot full time.

With no real work lined up after that kitchen..I knew it would cover atleast 3 months of expenses. So I took that leap of faith and thought..I have 3 months to sell another project..and never looked back..

Here we are almost 7 years later..
What a ride it has been.

In-House -OR- Outsource?

We usually order the doors...but sometimes we make 'em.

This is determined on a project to project basis.
Depends on timelines and project size...and most importantly..how I feel about it during any given time! 😅

Sometimes I just flat out dont feel like putting in the work and want to focus my time and efforts elsewhere. Other times Im fired up and I WANT to make them.

Also..this batch of 15 doors would have taken 10 business days, not including weekends & holidays, to get.....and I would have had to pay for them. I produced these here in 7 hours and kept that money In-House.

That is why we are in business after all..right? To make money?

That 7 hours of my hard work and time just paid for half of the shop rent for the month, or for any number of other things that we have to pay for just to keep the lights on.

It all drops down to the bottom line.

So..does making doors vs. ordering them make sense on paper?

Again..it all depends on so many different variables.

And those variables are always going to be unique to each individual person, shop, business and timing of when production needs to take place on top of any and everything else you might have going on simultaneously.

Just remember..
Someone has to make them..

Who's it gonna be?

You or Them?

The choice is yours.

Dialing In the Setup

The Paolini Pocket Rule is my go-to during setup.

The incremental markings on the side of the rule makes it ideal for gauging the correct height location.

Oversized Door Formula

1/8" inch is the magic number.

Its a nice whole number which makes for all kinds of easy references and simple math when going through this whole process w/ minimal waste.

Styles & Rails start 1/8" inch oversize in width.
Because the rail length dimensions are fixed and controlled by the inside opening, it makes the O.A. width 1/4" inch wider.

I then cut all the Styles 1/4" longer in length to match each rails extra 1/8" inch they have in width.

This means I can then glue up all the doors flushed out around the outside perimeter and it gaurentees all the inside dimensions will hold true in width & height.

Also..Guess what that means?

It means:
NO SPACER STICKS
NO MEASURING & MARKING

You get to throw away your tape measurer...one of my favorite things to do! 😁

After glue up..
You trim 1/8" inch off all four edges of the door all the way around and it will be cut to exact size, squared up, and the Style & Rail width dimensioning will be correct.
