We had a lovely, lively evening in the woodshop last night for our first Show + Tell event with , , , and presenting their ongoing work and process to a nicely full but not overstuffed shop, tools and all. A huge thanks to for making it all happen. We’ll do it again! (Reach out if you’re interested in presenting.)

Public service announcement: if you’re in San Francisco and you’re a homeowner or builder or installer and you’re thinking you might need a good safe ladder for getting work done up to nine or ten feet, you REALLY should get to and buy one of these podium ladders while the price is this good. They really are the business. I mean, I own one and I’m having serious thoughts about buying another one. Also, if you go up to to fish for Lahontan cutthroats, you’ll be ready to hang out at the drop-off.

We’re excited to partner with in launching the Artist Show + Tell series. and will take part as presenting artists but this event is ALSO about discussion and connection. If you are in SF, want to hear from four incredibly interesting artists and want to share your own thoughts and creative practice, JOIN US!
Inspired by Emily’s experiences with similar events during her time at , this will be a great evening in the exploring and celebrating different ways artists from different disciplines create their work. We’ll get inspired, exchange ideas, and reinforce that San Francisco is a place of artistic innovation. DM Emily or GVS to RSVP (appreciated for numbers and planning; not required for attendance.)

My sore thumb is sticking out like a sore thumb. That phrase popped into my head this morning as I was carrying two coffee cups upstairs. I’m definitely on the mend, but a month after my knife-cleaning accident I still can’t bend my hitch hiker very much. My most important digit has improved quite a bit—there’s only a tiny bit of scab left, but otherwise the wound has closed up nicely—but it’s still pretty stiff and swollen and parts of it are kinda numb but other parts are real tingly and sensitive. Prior finger trauma—Hey, it’s me!—informs me that it’s going to be many many months before the stiffness and swelling completely abate, and prior scar experience tells me that the tingly sensitivity will take even longer to resolve. I can do a lot of things with my hand that involve grasping with the four other fingers, the palm, and the crook of my thumb, but actions that require strength or delicacy at the tip of the thumb are not really possible yet. So, no chopsticks for me for a while, but I can launch the hell out of a lacrosse ball. I can push a hand saw no problem, but I can’t shift the safety switch on a chop saw handle to start a cut. Anyway, it coulda been a little worse, and as usual I feel incredibly fortunate despite the minor and/or temporary setbacks in my life.

Well, not much woodworking for me in the near future. Was it chiseling? Planing? Sawing? Sharpening? Carving? Nope. It was cleaning a kitchen knife while making Sunday morning breakfast. Seven stitches midway up the inside of my thumb. No major nerve or tendon damage, I think? Prior experience tells me it’s gonna be several months before the swelling and stiffness have fully abated and my finger is back to whatever the new baseline of utility is gonna be. Oh well… coulda been a lot worse.

I’m adding a third hinge to my front door, which is probably more than a century old, and as I chisel out the edge of the door for the leaf I am once again struck by how absolutely beautiful the lumber from the ancient old growth redwoods they used to cut down in Northern California was. (And SO MUCH of this stuff goes to the dumps when these old houses are remodeled.)
