California's years-long drought has exposed a serious flaw in its Industrial Agriculture model. Without billions of gallons of expensive irrigation water, California's Central Valley, the "Bread Basket" of the U.S., is not a sustainable farming system when exposed to normal climate fluctuations.

As the U.N. recently reported, the world's food needs can be met with small, localized, private and community farms that are very water efficient. Here's an example of how you can easily grow a staple food, Potatoes, right in your own backyard or deck with a minimum of water.

When scientists scoured lists of the city's community gardens, they discovered they didn't tell the whole story of where food was being grown. Satellite images instead show the city's food-producing gardens tucked away in backyards, on roofs and thriving in vacant lots.
