Straight Stitch🧵🧵🧵

-Because it only involves dragging the needle up through the fabric and then back down, the straight stitch hardly needs an explanation. But it's worthwhile to investigate the various applications for this fundamental embroidery stitch.

Stem Stitch

-Another fundamental stitch that works well for drawing clean outlines is the stem stitch. Although its name suggests it is only for embroidering stems, it also works well for straight and curved lines. On just about any line in your needlework, use a stem stitch.

The width of stem stitching can be changed, and it can also be used as a fill stitch, like many other stitches. Just make an effort to maintain a constant stitch length to produce a lovely outcome.

Back Stitch

-A fundamental stitch that works best for outlines is the back stitch. The canvas should not have any gaps between the threads. To fill in the blank area between the first and second stitches, make one stitch, then raise the needle through the cloth for the subsequent stitch.

Zig-zag Stitch

-A stitch that runs in a zig-zag pattern is what is known as a zig-zag stitch. When hemming stretchy or loosely woven textiles or attaching elastic to stretchy fabric, this stitch is crucial.

The foot of the machine hops left and right as you move the fabric underneath it when stitching this stitch on a sewing machine. You can adjust your machine to make the zigzag wider or narrower. Just keep enough fabric on the outside of the seam when sewing bigger zigzags to prevent the machine from stitching through nothing.

Running Stitch

-Running stitch is a straightforward embroidery technique that works well for adding details and dashed outlines to your needlework. It also serves as the foundation for Japanese sashiko needlework.

Although simple, it can be modified and made more complicated. By changing the length and spacing, for instance, or by inserting a second row of stitches between the first, you can alter the appearance. Another stitch that blends well with weaving and wrapping is this one.

Backstitch

-You'll be comfortable with the backstitch within the first few stitches because it's so simple to learn. You'll probably use this fundamental stitch the most. The backstitch is a crucial stitch to master since it works well with other stitches and is beneficial for all kinds of outlining. It can also be rapidly converted into the more ornamental Pekinese stitch and is simple to enhance with weaving or wrapping.

The backstitch is useful for any kind of hem, but it's also a stitch that pairs well with other stitches, making it an important stitch to learn. It's also easy to embellish by weaving or wrapping, and quickly transforms into a more decorative Beijing-style stitch.

Overlock Stitch

Overlocker machines (or serger machines) are a special type of sewing machine that are useful if you do a lot of hemming—they cut the edge of the fabric as they go along so you have a smooth edge that’s close up against the stitching. Otherwise, your regular sewing machine may be able to create this stitch, but usually without the cutting function. Special foot attachments on regular machines prevent the fabric from rolling up and getting untidy.

Elastic Thread

Elastic threads are “stretchier” and thicker than other types. They’re most often used with jersey fabric, elastic, and anything that needs to have some “give.”

Elastic thread is so thick you can’t string it through a machine. Instead, you’ll need to put it in a bobbin in tandem with whatever regular thread you are using.

These threads are great for ruffles, stretchy waistbands, and shirring. Shirring involves loading the bobbin with elastic thread and loading the needle with some other thread variety. Using 3-4 mm stitches spaced 3/8-1/2″ apart, it’s possible to give the fabric a decorative look.

Hand operated sewing machine

This is like the mustang of sewing machines – very popular once but not anymore. In fact it was the only option once.

The wheel of this sewing machine is operated by hand – there is a handle which you turn to run the machine. The major impediment is that it takes forever to sew anything. If you are interested in anything vintage you may want to buy this one for the novelty of it (I cannot imagine any other reason for anyone else wanting this) you can still get it from some market places.
