In 1938, Mary Thompson, once enslaved in Alabama, shared her memories with the WPA Federal Writersโ€™ Project. She was only fifteen when freedom cameโ€”old enough to remember the long days in the fields, the weary nights, and the rare moments of joy.

She recalled her mother baking salt-rising bread, Christmas eggnog and songs in the quarters, and the Fourth of July feasts when work briefly paused. Illness was constant, but remedies like catnip tea, sage, and calamus root carried them through when doctors were scarce.

By then, Mary had lived more than seventy years in freedom, yet the memories of bo***ge never left her. Her story, like thousands of others, preserves a truth: slavery was not faceless labor, but millions of lives, each marked by pain, endurance, and the will to remember.

Dog stealing blanket leads to heartwarming discovery
Security cameras caught a dog breaking into a retail store late one evening, dragging a blanket out the door. A co-worker followed the dog before closing and discovered he was carrying the blanket to an elderly homeless man.

Instead of taking it back, the worker returned to the store, gathering snacks, a pillow, and even some dog food to bring to them.

When the story was shared online, it quickly went viral. Donations poured in, and a GoFundMe was launched. Today, the man and his loyal dog are staying in a nearby motel while he applies for jobs, finally with warmth, food, and hope. When asked if he was upset about the missing blanket, the store owner smiled and said, โ€œWhy would I be upset? The dog did what so many humans wouldnโ€™t, help someone in need.โ€
