Kitchen cabinet trends designers say will date your space in 2026

As kitchens evolve from purely functional rooms into spaces for living and gathering, certain cabinet trends are starting to feel outdated. Heading into 2026, designers say kitchens should feel softer, warmer, and more layered, making some once-popular cabinet styles seem out of step.

One trend on the decline is tall, matching floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. Once prized for maximizing storage, these uniform designs can feel heavy, boxy, and overly utilitarian, especially in smaller spaces. Designers now favour a more collected look that combines fitted cabinetry with freestanding furniture, open shelving, and statement islands. This approach creates visual breathing room and makes kitchens feel naturally evolved rather than purely functional.

Handle-free cabinets are also falling out of favour. While their sleek, minimalist appeal was once celebrated, they are now seen as flat and lacking character. The return of visible hardware, subtle k***s or pulls in timeless finishes, adds warmth, texture, and personality, helping cabinets feel intentional and enduring.

Finally, glossy white cabinetry is losing its shine. High-gloss finishes can feel cold, show fingerprints, and lack individuality. Matte finishes, natural wood, soft stains, and earthy tones are emerging as preferred alternatives, supporting a welcoming, lived-in atmosphere.

Overall, the kitchens of 2026 will prioritise comfort, texture, and personality. Rigid, high-shine, and overly uniform designs are giving way to spaces that feel layered, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time in.
