Produced from the abundant North Central forests of the USA, Arbor Wood Co. (AWCo) offers innovative thermally modified timber for a variety of outdoor and indoor applications from housing installations to decorative fixtures and product components. AWCo Thermally Modified Timber (TMT) joins together sustainably harvested wood, and a value added heat modification process, to bring finished TMT goods to a variety of markets and uses. Thermal Modification is a process that replaces the use of chemicals to enhance an inapt wood species performance with heat and steam so it is suitable for a multitude of applications indoors and out. The high heat modifies the cell structure of the wood and makes it highly resistant to rot while greatly reducing expansion and contraction. Through multiple cook temperatures a range of color options within a single species can be achieved without the use of stains. Aesthetically the wood is darkened in color and it brings an unexpected tropical look to more commonly lighter indigenous wood species. Since Thermally Modified wood does not absorb or hold moisture as it would prior to treatment, species that typically do not perform well in outdoor or wet environments can now be used as decking or siding.

We’re investing in the future of thermally modified wood.🪵

Arbor Wood Co. has announced an agreement with Jartek to add a second Jartek thermal modification kiln at our St. Joe, Indiana manufacturing facility—bringing our total kiln fleet to four. This expansion means more than increased capacity. It strengthens our ability to deliver high-performing, domestically manufactured ThermoWood® products with the consistency, quality, and technical expertise our customers expect.

As demand for natural materials that combine beauty with durability, dimensional stability, and long-term performance continues to grow, we’re continuing to invest in the technology and infrastructure needed to serve the North American market.

The future of thermally modified wood is being built here in the U.S. 🇺🇸

Project Feature: Ravine House - Set against a 15-acre sustainable agroforestry farm in Mocksville, North Carolina, the Ravine House is designed to feel at home in its landscape.

Clad in Arbor Wood Co. thermally modified pine, the home pairs natural material with a distinctly modern aesthetic. The pine cladding—finished in both natural and black tones—creates contrast while allowing the warmth and character of real wood to remain central to the design. Designed and built by ADAMS DesignBuild, Inc. the home sits above the ravine on concrete piers and glulam beams, responding thoughtfully to both the site and its environment.

Some spaces demand wood that barely moves at all. Saunas. Millwork. Interior wall and ceiling applications where a board that shifts even slightly is a board that causes problems.

Thermo-S is modified at lower temperatures — 190°C — specifically for stability in controlled environments. The result is wood that holds its dimensions through humidity swings, stays flat, and finishes beautifully for interior applications where the material is up close and personal.

Perched above the Lake Shore in Minnesota, this custom-built home showcases the natural character and refined performance of Arbor Wood Co.’s Natrl Line of vertical grain thermally modified pine. From the beginning, the design called for a clean, uninterrupted vertical siding application—making the continuity of the wood grain an important part of the overall aesthetic.

Each board carries its own natural grain pattern, creating a façade that reads as clean and cohesive from a distance while revealing depth, movement, and variation up close.
