Hoosier Mama Restorations

Hoosier Mama Restorations Hi! I'm Megan - the owner of Hoosier Mama Restorations in Russiaville, IN! I’m Megan— the owner of Hoosier Mama Restorations! I couldn't wait to really get going!

I'm here to transform your furniture the way YOU want it; all while providing quality craftsmanship with that Hoosier Spirit. I am the wife of Christian (the muscles of the operation) and mother of one child. I began refinishing furniture shortly after our son was born and we bought a home. It was actually a happy accident, we needed storage for our son's things in the living room so I went on Mar

ketplace and bought a $20 MCM dresser. I cleaned it, painted it, and it was perfect for what we needed. We needed something very sturdy for our chunky baby 🤣so our son couldn't climb it and knock it over. After that, it spiraled into a true love for refinishing furniture and learning woodworking. After 3.5 years of buying furniture and refinishing it when I had time while taking care of our young son; I began to dream about having a full time restoration business. I knew I wanted to do this for a living. When my son began pre-school I was able to finish more projects. My dream came true when our son went to Kindergarten and we decided to sell our house and buy a home with a workshop! In the meantime, I started getting asked if I could refinish a family heirloom or a dresser set that was given to them by a relative. It really snowballed from there and my business changed into scheduling people's furniture of the lovely community around me. Twelve years later and I've refinished pieces from all areas of Indiana! Painting furniture quickly became artistic therapy… the colors, the finishes, the transformations…

After years of refinishing furniture it has become artistic therapy for me. The most important part of refinishing furniture is using the right products. After trialing so many, from big box stores to smaller niche companies, I have found my favorite, most reliable products that make my job the easiest and are sure to last for years to come — I'm here to transform your furniture the way YOU want it; all while providing quality craftsmanship with that Hoosier Spirit. Thank you for being here and supporting my small business. I’m excited to share my passion and everything I’ve learned along the way. I can customize your furniture with any paint color/stain/wax! My goal is to help you fall back in love with those special family heirlooms that just needs some sprucing up! There are a ton of pictures on my page of all the pieces I've transformed over the past 12 years. Take a look to see that the quality of my work is top notch. Contact me if you need a specific piece and I'll go on the hunt for you! I love doing that!! I try to stay scheduled out several months so message me now for a free quote and lets get you scheduled! These antique beauties received the full glow up package! They were sanded to bare wood, given fresh dark stain, and sealed for durability! A deep green tone called SW Ripe Olive was painted on the buffet for added depth. The original wood k***s were refinished and not painted, which gives it so much character 🥰

The side table was the client's great grandmother's! What an honor to work on a timeless family heirloom. She was falling apart but I put her back together like Humpty Dumpty and boom 💥🤯
From ready for the trash pile to showroom status; this table is ready for another 100 years!

Loving my client's last dresser in this series!!

This is a four-drawer antique dresser that blends Empire and Late Victorian influences with a rustic refinish!
The piece features a "top-heavy" design with 4 wide, stacked Drawers characteristic of the mid-to-late 19th century. The top drawer is slightly recessed or framed differently than the bottom three, which is common in Eastlake or Empire transition pieces.
It sits on elegant, turned "spool" or "balustrade" style legs, giving the heavy frame a more delicate, elevated stance.
Small carved corbels or brackets support the overhanging top section, adding a touch of architectural interest.

My client chosee a Two-Tone Palette: The dresser has been refinished with a curated color contrast. The main body and frame are a creamy light taupe called SW Moth Wing. The drawer fronts are a slate blue called SW Rain Cloud with a dark wax hand rubbed wax finish.

The wood top, which features a rich, swirling grain pattern typical of Maple with a dark coffee-toned stain called Jacobean by Minwax.

I put on new Hardware to finish the piece. Each drawer is fitted with two dark, oil-rubbed black "cup" bin pulls.

This whole piece was sanded down and cleaned. Drawers and tracks were oiled to reduce friction on wood gliding on wood. It received a total refresh!!

I love my job! Thank you Jessica!!

What an amazing month of March refinishing these pieces!!

The history on piece #3 of this epic antique series is so fascinating!!

This piece is a beautiful example of a Late Victorian "Eastlake" style dresser, likely dating from the 1870s to the 1890s. The Eastlake Movement (Late 19th Century)
was named after British architect Charles Eastlake.

Eastlake pushed for "honest" furniture that was easier to clean and featured incised (carved into the wood) linear decorations rather than bulky 3D carvings. The shallow, geometric floral carvings on the center of the drawers and the "pediment" (the crown-like top) of the mirror are hallmarks of American Eastlake furniture.

This wasn't just a decorative piece; it was a high-functioning station for morning rituals.
The grey marble slab on the top surface was historically used because it was waterproof. This allowed a person to keep a ceramic pitcher and basin there for washing up before indoor plumbing was common.

The Mirror & "Glove" Drawers: The tall mirror was a luxury for checking one's formal attire. The two tiny drawers flanking the mirror were traditionally used for small, delicate items like gloves, collar pins, or pocket watches.

This dresser needed quite a bit of TLC....

✔️Every drawer track had to be reattached
✔️Every drawer was sanded down to glide in and out with ease because of expansion over time
✔️Drawer liners installed
✔️Every inch sanded, cleaned/degreased before any paint was even opened

✔️The body and outer mirror surrounding were painted in SW Cream and Sugar
✔️The drawers and framed mirror were painted in SW Mannered Gold
✔️The vintage look and durability was ultimately achieved with distressing and a combination of clear and dark brown wax

I am so honored to have brought back a piece of history all while creating that perfect look for the client!!

On to the last piece...this one has the most beautiful red cherry top and deep drawers for a huge amount of storage in their master bedroom!

Thank you Jessica 🙏

This 3 drawer dresser is piece #2 of the series! An oldie but goodie!!

The last picture shows a Knapp joint, also commonly known as a "pin and cove" or "half moon" joint.
This joint was invented by Charles Knapp in 1867 and was the first mechanized woodworking joint used for furniture production.
It serves as a strong, functional alternative to dovetails and was popular for furniture manufacturing between approximately 1870 and 1900.
The appearance of this joint is a strong indicator that the furniture piece dates from this specific industrial era.

✔️The top was sanded to bare wood and to my surprise revealed a beautiful wood grain 🪵
✔️The top was sealed with a clear wax to highlight it's showstopping natural beauty
✔️The body and drawers were painted in SW Moody Blue and heavily distressed for that shabby chic feel
✔️Every drawer was sanded down to glide in and out with ease
✔️Drawer liners installed...peep the mushrooms ❤️
✔️Clear wax to seal the paint for durability and a super smooth feel

I am so honored to have brought back a piece of history!!

On to the next amazing piece...this one has the most beautiful mirror with a granite piece showcased on the top!

Thank you Jessica!! You've been amazing to work with 🙏

What a pleasure it was to find this buffet for my client! She needed more storage and a very specific size to fit her space. After a bit, I found one with a walnut top and solid construction. The top was sanded to bare wood and restained to compliment her built in book cases and fireplace in her home 🏠

She chose a dark blue called Anchor's Aweigh by Sherwin Williams. After fixing tons of dents on the bottom legs with wood filler and sanding smooth, it was time to clean/degrease and prime! After multiple coats of primer, the piece was ready to be painted and sealed.

The original oval handles had beautiful detail so I cleaned them and added a gilding wax to highlight the detail. The inside of the cabinet was cleaned with Orange Glo and smells great. The Orange Glo 🍊 brings the wood back to life. What a great product!

This buffet will last my client for years to come! Thank you Gail! You were a pleasure to work with!!
