Roscommon Community Garden

Roscommon Community Garden The Crawford-Roscommon Conservation District has established a community garden in Roscommon where people can learn about gardening and landscaping.

A pollinator habitat garden, asparagus patch, and raised beds will teach people about renewable resources. In addition, trees and shrubs will be planted to teach people about species that grow in Northern Michigan. We are always seeking volunteers, so if you are interested, please contact Maureen Ruddy at 989 745-5999.

Roscommon Community Garden has its own miracle workers, Libbie McDonald and Jeannie Bennick. Libbie meticulously weeded the flower garden in front of the fence, spending hours of her time to give it the care required to show off its beauty.
Jeannie took on the sole responsibility of tending to the three concrete pots along Main Street. She has planted herbs in the pots. Once established, they will be available for anyone wanting a snip here or there! If you are interested in spending time in the garden, maintaining just one of the community beds, please PM us. You may find you are receiving many more benefits than what you are giving.

Another busy day spent with Roscommon High School students! These hardworking kids volunteered not only in the Community Garden; they managed to fit in planting nine beds of flowers downtown on Lake Street.

Meet Dana Edwards, Roscommon High School science teacher and a member of the Roscommon Community Garden Advisory Board! Her students have graciously offered to work in the garden, getting it ready for the 2026 season. These two young men worked diligently this afternoon! Tanner Green trimmed the perimeter and around all of the raised beds, and Hunter Randall weeded our Community bed, preparing it for planting. Dana’s students grew seedlings in her classroom and now they are ready to be transplanted. The produce will support our donation program. Tomorrow, Dana is bringing another crew to continue their great work (watch for more pictures and updates)! Also, a big shout out to Jake Klemmer and Evan Civinskas, our mowing crew! We are very proud of the youth of Roscommon. They are exceptional.

Thanks to the crew from Kelley's Clean Cut Lawn Care, the garden's outside perimeter, fenceline, and sidewalk are all neat and clean. We have a beautiful spot here in the village, and year after year we rely on Dave and his crew to keep it pristine.

And what are those shiny new things stacked up in the corner of the Garden? Fourteen new raised beds that were built by the students in Mr. Hunt’s shop class at Roscommon High School! Materials were delivered on April 20 and these hardworking kids (and volunteer Mike Lamb) had all of the beds built in two weeks. With the help of Calvin Hoogerhyde and Don Chaney, the new beds were delivered to the garden and will be available for lease once they are set and filled. Let us know if you want to be added to our wait list. Thanks to everyone who worked on the beds, and to the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund for their grant supporting this project. We’re delighted with this progress – revenue from the leases helps offset the expenses of the garden and we love to donate extra produce to folks in our community. What goes around, comes around!

A big thanks to our friends at ROOC for their help and collaboration over the last several years. They not only grow seeds in the classroom for the community beds but also plant, maintain and harvest their two raised beds which will provide the produce for their cooking classes and potluck. They have been a big help bi-weekly with the gardens overall maintenance. Another strong example of our community working together. If you are interested in learning how you can help, please PM me.

For the last couple of years, the Community Garden has received many helping hands from Roscommon Elementary School. A shout out goes to 4 teachers this year, Mrs. Gonska, Ms. Blossfeld, Mrs. Bibbey and Mr. Mayes for incorporating botany and agriculture in the curriculum. The garden supplies the seed and light kits and the students supply the “sunshine”. A field trip at the garden will follow the last week of school for the children to transplant the seedlings. Last year, this collective effort resulted in 345 pounds of produce going back to the community. Proof that we are stronger together.
