For almost 30 years, we have woven new life into thousands of chairs, benches and even canoes! Yikes! The count is well into the thousands.
And we have enjoyed it, the challenges and not to overlook our wonderful customers. You have kept us very busy and trusted us with some very sentimental family heirlooms. And have been our advertisers for all of that time.

We are not near the end, however, we are adapting a new policy. Well, it’s not really new, we just haven’t pushed it!
While we appreciate the work greatly, we are finding it difficult to control what we are taking in. Please contact us before you come in with your chair.

Erin has established a list of people interested and calls them when we have space and time.
It’s not a matter of us wearing out as much as it is getting supplies and having room to store incoming work.

So, we ask you to call first and if possible send us a photo of your project.
We can start there and provide a pretty close estimate. Erin is very good at walking people through the work process and estimating.

We have always taken pride in what we do. Quality is far more important than quantity. And our goal is to keep it that way.
Without you, our loyal customers, we would not be doing what we love to do.
Don’t hesitate to call or send an email. Erin will get back to you pronto!

Our email address is : [email protected]
Thank you.
Erin and John.🪑

Why the cardboard ?
There is a void between the top and bottom weaving that needs to be filled. If it is left unfilled, the top weavers will drop to the bottom ones and create a sag in the seat. Also put pressure on the strands at the side rails and cut them.
The cardboard also covers the splices and square knots. That “bump” would work its way to the surface .
More will be added as the center is closed in.
And, it also makes a smoother and flat surface.
We often find all kinds of padding materials between weaving. Recently we found a pair of nylon stockings! Old folded newspaper is another one. If cardboard was available back when some of these chairs were made, you’d find it in there !🪑

Here are a couple of really unusual and very pretty pieces.
The one to the left is a maple chair. Both tiger and birdseye wood are in this piece. Hand carved back add to its beauty.

The one to the right could pass as a chair made of cast iron ! Very ornate details. Elegant enough for a piece from a castle ! The seat will be hand woven, but what makes it a little more challenging, and unique, is that it uses two sizes of cane. One size cane is very thin and often only seen in very fine furniture. 🪑

Challenges with rush seating.

Each type of weaving we do has its own set of challenges.
Some are with the style of the chair, some with the material we are using on it and some challenges are hidden until we take the old seating out.

This chair is getting a fiber rush seat. Fiber rush is a twisted craft paper, think paper bags.
It comes in 40 pound coils. Each chair takes about 2 to 2.5 lbs to complete.
Woven damp only, the challenge is to keep checking to be certain that it is closing toward the center equally.
Constantly measuring and closing the gaps by tapping them together is one way. Another is by reversing the twist in the material. Or making it tighter.

There is no easy fix if the gaps do not close equally other than to take it all out and start over again. UGH!

This seat is still wet and will need to be adjusted and when dry shellaced. It will take 3 coats of shellac. That will give the seat a better wear surface and help to keep it clean.

Depending on use, it could be part of many gatherings before we will see it again ! 🪑

We often have chairs to sell. They have new seats and are ready to go !
They are chairs that we used for demonstrations.
Here are but a few.
Our preference is the early ladder back or kitchen press back with hand woven seats. But we do have other styles. And cover a broad range of years.
Stop by to see if we have something that you may be looking for to use as a spare or just brighten a corner.

This Shaker style armchair was once black but painted this beautiful copper color by the customer.

She chose this black and butternut Shaker tape for the seat. Woven in a checkerboard pattern. I think she made a good choice! 🪑

Well I see we won’t be getting much work done that day! What a wonderful event to have in our building! 🐾❤️

You may remember a few weeks ago we posted a before and after photo of the little rocker in this photo. Well, here it is today with its big brother that John just completed.

These are really nice early antique rocking chairs. We are not sure of the age of them but they are quite old. Soon they will be going back to their home and someone hopefully will be enjoying many hours of happy rocking! 🪑

One of our favorite styles of chairs - the Boston Rocker. The fact that this is a child’s rocker makes it all the more special! We wonder how many little ones have used this chair in its 200 years! 🪑
