This chair belonged to my grandmother, Opal.

It was the very first chair I ever reupholstered—long before I truly understood the craft, before my hands knew what they know now. At the time, I was focused on the surface. Making something look better. I didn’t yet have the language for foundations, or the experience to fully respect what was happening beneath the fabric.

Eighteen years later, I’m returning to it.

This chair doesn’t check every box on a traditional “worth saving” list. It doesn’t have hand-tied springs or elaborate joinery. But it is a solid, well-made frame—and more importantly, it carries a strong foundation of a different kind.
It carries memory.

Revisiting this piece now, with deeper understanding and refined skill, feels like closing a quiet circle. The early photos remind me where I began. The in-progress work shows how much has changed—not just in technique, but in intention.
This chair isn’t finished yet. And that feels right.

Because this part of the process—the stripping back, the rebuilding, the moments you don’t usually see—is where the real work happens. Doing it again, the right way, isn’t about perfection. It’s about honoring where I started, what shaped me, and why this work still matters.

Intentional living isn’t about saving everything. It’s about choosing carefully.

And sometimes, what makes a piece worth saving has less to do with how it was built—and everything to do with what it holds.
