Today’s project at the lake- we had to say goodbye to the hot tub we inherited when we bought this townhouse. It was 21 years old and had a leak that we could not fix despite throwing more money at it than it was worth, among other issues. The deck flooring underneath it is a hot mess so we needed to make it temporarily safe until we can get it fixed. We covered it with precut thick plywood boards and an outdoor rug from Lowe’s and added the wicker furniture that used to live on our screened porch in Roanoke. I need to add some pillows and a coffee table but this will do for now. Now we have an additional outdor living area. 😊

Happy birthday to this guy, who has been entertaining me since we met in September, 1989. He had to go out of town for work today (bummer!) but we will celebrate tomorrow! Love you, Tominator!! 🥳❤️

This goodest good girl is now running wild and pain free on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. We had to lay our sweet and sassy Kanga to rest today. It was such a hard decision to make but it was the right one and we were with her, petting her and telling her how much we loved her. I’m so thankful that TJ was able to be here- he was her boy! She wasn’t supposed to live more than 4 to 6 months after she was diagnosed with cancer a year ago but Kanga said, “Hold my beer!” She was silly, energetic and loved car rides, boat rides, and walks of any kind- she was always up for an adventure. We were her third family and as soon as we met Kanga when she was a year and a half, we knew we would be her forever family. We will miss her so very much but are grateful for the 12 years that we had with her. 🐕‍🦺❤️🌈

I’m spending the day resting to get over this sinus infection that I have been fighting through for two weeks (why do I do that? I knew something was wrong and should’ve gone to the doctor earlier!) and I noticed how beautiful this crape myrtle outside my bedroom window looks in all her fall glory. When we first planted her, we thought she had died and almost dug her up. I’m so glad we didn’t!🍁🍂💛🧡🤎

We moved into this house in February 2008 and I have slowly been trying to transform it to my style over the last 16 years. Sometimes, I didn’t quite make it. When we changed the basement from a playroom into a living area, I painted it this weird blue color called Beach House and I had all kinds of plans but just never got there. It’s like I hung a few things on the wall with the intention of creating gallery walls but then just stopped…Usually, I am the one who paints. As recently as 2020, I was painting our guest room, hallway and the foyer. Weren’t we all doing stuff like that in 2020?! But I have grown increasingly frustrated with my precision and speed so I decided to turn this one over to the professionals. Today and tomorrow, we are having Tom’s office and the basement painted. We are going dark blue in Tom’s office (Sherwin-Williams Tempe Star) and bright white in the basement (Sherwin-Williams Extra White). However, in light of the fact that the fireplace is wood-burning which has caused discoloration on the white painted brick, I’ve decided to go with Sherwin-Williams In the Navy on the brick. I’m excited to see the new looks and hopefully, complete my vision for the basement! 😊

Once spring weather arrives, I get completely distracted and turn my focus outside so it has taken me a minute to remember to post pictures of our completed family room facelift. I can’t get over how different it looks with the new luxury vinyl plank floors from COREtec Floors and area rug from The Home Depot. The fabric I got at the TXTUR warehouse sale to reupholster the couch is absolutely gorgeous. And I’m so happy with how the antique dining room sideboard updated as an entertainment center turned out! I sanded and restained the top with Minwax Polyshades Stain + Poly in One Step in Honey Pine. I love the warm wood tone! Then I painted the base with General Finishes milk paint in Gulf Stream Blue. I loved all the little details and highlighted them with General Finishes Van D**e glaze and light distressing. Of course no furniture paint job is finished without General Finishes High Performance Top Coat. Finally, the original hardware cleaned up nicely with a little Bar Keepers Friend and a toothbrush. Thanks again, Jeanie Francis for gifting me with this lovely piece!! Now when we come in this room, we don’t see a worn out couch and stained carpet, we see a beautiful, fresh new space!☺️

Our family room (before pics here) is getting a much needed facelift~ yay! This 16 year old Berber carpet that we had installed when we moved in will be replaced by luxury vinyl plank in Midway Oak to match (as closely as possible) the hardwood floors upstairs. I have never been a fan of carpet or tile (in living areas) but rooms that are below grade didn't have many other options until LVP came along (even Pergo wouldn't work if the moisture level was too high). The couch has gone to be reupholstered for the second time (learn from my mistakes- NO DENIM ON FURNITURE!😆) in a gorgeous silver blue velvety textured upholstery that I got at during their warehouse sale for FIVE DOLLARS A YARD!! I feel very strongly that if your upholstered furniture is sturdy but looking a little shabby or dated, reupholstering it is the way to go. New furniture is outrageous (especially custom furniture where you can choose your fabric) and it is WAY cheaper to find upholstery fabric on sale and get it recovered. I have literally reupholstered every piece of furniture in my house at least once (including the green catcher's mitt chair and ottoman in the corner) and never paid full price for the fabric. There are always sales or sources for discontinued but beautiful fabrics at a discount. I will be happy to share my local spots! I am a sucker for antique furniture and the awesome bow front chest of drawers that we have been using for the TV was free~ a friend’s neighbor was cleaning out her MIL’s house and kindly offered it to me (my friend knew I would love it!). I restyled it with Chalked paint in Tidal Pool and now it will live in our guest room. I am almost finished transforming the sideboard that I was recently gifted by another friend to be the new entertainment center. The finishing touch will be a beautiful area rug from , my go to for attractive and affordable rugs. I’m so excited for this project to be completed! (I would also like to point out that good friends who source or give you furniture for free are the best!! 😊❤️)

If you know me well, you know I love old houses and antique furniture. We have bought two homes built in the early 50’s (I guess that qualifies as “old” according to the DJ who told me on Friday night that music made before 1990 is “really old”~ Lord help us!😆) and I have restyled countless pieces of antique furniture that have seen better days and just needed some love and a new life. This is my most recent acquisition, thanks to Jeannie and Steve Francis, who so very kindly gifted me with this beautiful sideboard that belonged to Steve’s grandparents. I already know what I want to do and where it will live in our house and I can’t wait to get started on its transformation.
