Get yourself a man like Carl. Carl was a rooster that was supposed to be a hen, from a batch of chicks at the house. He was just about to find himself a new home, and then we started having some trouble with hawks at the farm. As a last resort, we sent Carl over to see if he could help. Carl is a born protector, and he fit right in and went to work. He herds the girls under the coop at the first sign of trouble and patrols the perimeter until it’s safe for them to come out. This man has earned his keep and a permanent spot at the farm. ❤️❤️

This is a ONE TON tote of non-GMO feed from . Just in case you aren’t sure, a ton is 2,000lbs. I can’t believe we’ve made it to this volume already, and the chicken math is still going strong! 😬🐥🥚

One benefit of the shorter days is that we can more easily move the chickens at night.

A little Sunday evening chicken relocation!

This will help us start the week off right. By moving them after dark, they have all roosted in the coop for the night so it’s much easier and safer for the chickens to be moved to their newest area.

Also, with lighter forage during the winter, and with all the rain, we were blessed to get today they will be more apt to tear up the ground. So we want to move them a little faster so their impact is lessened on the land.

Gotta keep ‘em moving!

What do you do about hawks??? This is a question I get asked a lot when people find out we use mobile coops and electric netting. The answer isn’t simple, and it changes based on where we are and what I have available. A week ago, I saw two hawks stalking the girls 😳. So we used two coops and made a safety tunnel. The food is positioned such that the chickens back up to the coops while they eat, so they can quickly retreat underneath if needed. I waited until we moved to a new area to post this, and I can safely say we didn’t have any loses! 🐓💪.

If you follow the emails from , you already know this story. But it’s mine, so I get to tell it too🙄. After the Saturday night picnic success, was a Sunday morning fail. I knew driving the van around the fields was risky, and I knew eventually I was going to get stuck. But I wasn’t expecting it to be this dramatic. If you can’t quite tell what’s going in this pic, I managed to find a hole almost as large as my van. In my previous life, this would have taken lots of hours and money to solve. But Sunday it was a quick tug with the tractor and I was on my way! And everyone was even nice enough to wait until I left to chuckle. 🤦‍♀️🐓

Still working out the finer details of rotating the chickens on farm. The goal is for them to follow the cows as closely as possible. Today we’re at least within eyesight!

Watch out, I’ve been given permission to go mobile! It’s almost time to move the chickens wayyyyy out into the field, and the mom van can’t hack the trip. So glad there’s been no one around to watch while I learn how to maneuver this thing. And yes, I am this many years old and have never driven a 4 wheeler 🤦‍♀️😳

It’s not always easy to get moving in the morning. But once I’m at the farm and I get to spend a minute enjoying the view with Brutty, it all feels a little better.
