The Recovery Room Reupholstery

The Recovery Room Reupholstery Re-upholstery: The art of repair or fitting furniture with new fabric covering, padding, springs...the business or work of giving old furniture new life.

The Recovery Room Reupholstery shop began in June of 2009 on our family farm located in Preston, MN. Recently, we have made the move to River Falls, WI and the shop is still open and operating! We are now located just 3 miles east of River Falls off County Road JJ & Evergreen Drive. Owner/operator – Genny Smith – welcomes the opportunity to give new life to old, worn out, faded, tattered & torn, u

sed–a-bit, comfortable & sentimental pieces of furniture that customers desire to have “made new again”. About Genny:
"I started acquiring upholstery skills as an employee of a furniture manufacturing company in 2000 where I learned about commercial and industrial office furniture. In 2005 I was introduced to the art of re-upholstering residential furniture as an employee of a local small business. In 2009 I opened my own shop while continuing to work full time as an employee of a well known furniture business. In 2015 I decided to take the leap and turned my part time shop into my full time career. It has been a blessing. I guess you could say I love doing what I do and am at it 6-7 days a week! At this time I provide 20 years of experience in upholstery/re-upholstery. It brings me joy to see customers re-united with their favorite piece of furniture after it has a new look and new life!"

Nancy began a DIY project of refinishing and reupholstery of this antique platform rocker and small footstool. Part way through the project, after the tear down and removal of old fabric and stuffing - - and refinishing the wood frame of the rocker …she found she needed help to complete. She came to me with these pieces and had selected a fabric. I did some underlying structural work as far as adding new burlap, new foam and Dacron wrap to the seat spring unit. Also removed the old broken back spring unit and replaced it with new jute webbing-burlap- back foam-cotton layer. Now it was ready to put the new fabric on and add a gimp trim around the edges of the seat-inside back-outside back. The small footstool needed some reinforcements on the base and was reupholstered to the same fabric as the rocker. Nancy was delighted to see her vision of this special piece completed! Sometimes you just “need a little help from your friends!”
I love making dreams come true!!

Recent reupholstery projects completed at the shop…from chest/bench toppers to Ranger seats, and more! Always seems to be a variety of things that need recovering. Also had 2 seat cushions that customers dogs had chewed through fabric and zippers to get at the foam. What fun!!🐕‍🦺🦮 more to come, I am sure!😃

Here is part 2 of Laura and Adam’s furniture Reupholstery project. These 4 barrel chairs, on a swivel base, were transformed from a basic green vinyl fabric to this amazing stripe pattern from Charlotte Fabrics! This fabric is not only suitable for home and contract applications, but also can be for outdoors and marine! A heavy duty 140,000 rubs, bleach cleanable, weather resistant, repels liquid-stain-fade-mildew fabric that has a light fastness of over 3,000 hours and is PFAS free….doesn’t get much better than that!
Yes, the stripes were a challenge to cut and line up on upholstery… not gonna lie! In the end, all turned out well, and I believe they all look alike! Perfect for Springtime and Easter entertainment in their home!
There will be a part 3 …another project …
in the months to come😃.

Last month we delivered this project. Laura and Adam had these 5 swivel barstools reupholstered in a Charlotte Fabrics Breathables fabric-bone color-100% cotton fleece backing. Heavy duty, easy cleanable.. the way to go on these exceptional chairs! Originally, the old faux leather started peeling and had become very unsightly. Lots of nailheads to remove and then install new ones! ( about 325 each chair!)
Laura told me she was very pleased with how they turned out.. she said “ they are beyond perfect!” Also said she had talked to furniture stores beforehand about whether to purchase new chairs or get them reupholstered??? They said “ it will be too expensive and then you won’t like the product” “they were so wrong!” she said. “ they are worth the expense and the work is amazing!”
That was job #1 for Laura and Adam…
2nd job is now finished and has been delivered today.. stay tuned for part 2!😃

Kate brought a chair by the shop last October to get reupholstered. I told her I was booked out 4 months and it would be February before I got to it.. she said “ok” and left me a swatch of Pottery Barn fabric sample(55% linen-45% cotton) she wanted to match as close as possible for content and color. A Charlotte Select Natural Textures pattern was chosen and ordered for her. She also mentioned that she had washed the seat cushion cover and back cushion cover… because it had gotten soiled. I kind of cringed at the thought because - more often than not- upholstery fabrics should not be put in the washer or dryer. Unless they are specifically labeled as “machine washable”.. they are probably gonna shrink! These did, so I had to make a new pattern and determine the original size the covers were so they fit the existing cushions properly.
The chair turned out quite nicely and is now back in her living room. She messaged me after getting it home and put inside saying “ you really did a nice job on my chair!”
Customer satisfaction is a wonderful thing.. she agreed, and said repeat business is wonderful, too.. right??!! It is! Thanks, Kate!

A truckload of reupholstered furniture left the shop yesterday, headed home to Hudson, Wisconsin. My very happy customer sent me photos of the pieces after they were put back in place. Always a joy for me to see the pieces I’ve worked on back in their spots… “ living their best life- new life”! Thank you, for your confidence in my abilities!😃

Renee came to me for reupholstering her 6 kitchen/dining chairs. They had served her well for many years, but it was time for a new look! They are what I call a Chromecraft style/look alike chair with the swivel base/ wood arm & back framing. The backs were a sewn cushion wrap over the underlying back cushion and frame. So, a bit time consuming to re-create, but very comfortable! She stayed with green tones when choosing her new fabric-a chenille in a sea foam color. She was thrilled with the fabric and was eager to send me photos of the chairs after she got them back in her home! They look so inviting! A pleasure doing business with you, Renee!😁

A couple recent jobs completed on my Christmas list! Serina had a special little vanity chair to get reupholstered in this bright spring green fabric. Going to be part of their new home in Decorah, Iowa! Not much repair or additional or replacement of cushioning.. just a bit of added padding, and some decorative nail heads on the corners of seat/leg areas.
Kristi had her glider rocker reupholstered. Seat/back cushions along with the deck pad below the seat cushion. A new home-new decor! She also had 6 of her dining chair seat board cushions re-done to fit in with the new look! Have a great holiday in your new home!

Second project for Wendy! She just stopped over and picked up the blue chair. I gave it a new firm foam seat cushion and extra filler in the back cushion. A fully upholstered leg model that is a comfy smaller chair to sit by the warmth of the wood fire.
The first project is also a smaller chair, but comfy barrel style, buttoned, in a pretty print fabric. We eliminated the skirt as the wood legs looked good and it brings in a more contemporary style! Enjoy the holidays, Wendy! New projects bring new friends!😃

And “here’s another one, just like the other one!”….well not exactly, but close!
John and Delores brought their rolled arm chair and ottoman to the shop for reupholstery. The old floral pattern just wasn’t “fun” or “attractive “ anymore.. worn and used! This maroon diamond check fabric seems to fit this chair perfectly in keeping with its’ era.. day and time! It needed new seat foam, a broken spring replaced, and some of the wood trim pieces had come off. Some additional padding and buttons in the back cushioning give it some additional detail. A wood reconditioner was applied.. and it looks beautiful! A family heirloom back at center stage in their home.
