This vanity or low chest of drawers was worse for wear when it came However, there was nothing intrinsically wrong with it, only a dull finish, some gauges and nicks, and a marble top which needed polishing.
Instead of just doing a strip/stain/refinish job, I decided to have fun with it and used an ebony stain for the framing and parts of the drawers. Then on the recessed sides and on main areas of the drawers themselves I used reddish stain for contrast. And, volia, a more distinctive look which enables the piece to be displayed distinctively in a variety of rooms.

HALF MEASURES CAN AVAIL US A GREAT DEAL OR TWO TONING YOUR WAY TO GREATNESS
In cases where a marginal piece of furniture needs only a top surface facelift I’ve found selecting a new a complementary but more vibrant stain for the main surface, and then just sprucing up the legs with a wood restorer
This set of rather of nondescript stacked side tables had a lot of damage to the top surface, however, the legs were in reasonably good shape. Since the stain was a dark, drab cross between a Jacobean and Ebony, simply matching it would not add any excitement to the thing.
Instead, I choose to do the top surface of all three tables in a red mahogany dye stain, toping them off with three coats of semi-gloss polyurethane finish varnish. For the small amount of time it took to do the job, I think the results gave the tables a fresh, upbeat and modern look compared to the funereal appearance of the original.

Forgive me for not posting more this summer; late this spring I hurt my back and was more or less out of action for about a month. Then in June, I became quite busy and frankly forgot about keeping things current.
Below are two of the larger projects I worked on in the last month. The first set of pictures shows a work in progress with half the mahogany top stripped and the other half with its old stain and finish. The next shot is the same table completely restored to its original beauty.
The second set of pics is of large pine kitchen table undergoing a facelift.
Often enough the simple solution to restoring a table to its original beauty is simply to restain and refinish the top. This is an expensive solution which results in a big payoff , and with Baxter work like this is always affordable.

COFFEE TABLE REDUX: This well-worn table had spend a good deal of its life in a basement den where it suffered the tender mercies of several teenagers who collective bestowed on it quite a few scratches and gouges. The owners instead of discarding a perfectly sound piece of furniture asked Baxter to see if we could restore it. After sanding and stripping and the application of a matching stain and several coats of gel finish, this once neglected piece now resides proudly in the owner's living room

This is a shot of me working on a headboard in my workshop. I do my stripping and repair work here but staining, painting and refinishing is done I a clear space adjacent to the shop.
