They lied to us in grade school when we were taught that Red, Yellow and Blue are primary colors of the subtractive process. As you see in this correct color chart, Cyan (25), Magenta (13) and Yellow (1) are the primary colors of the subtractive process. Red (7), Green (31) and Blue (19) are actually the secondary colors. You may recognize these secondary colors as RGB which are the primary colors of the additive process. This RGB was demonstrated in the old tube televisions that created the multitude of observed color with a mere 3 color tubes. The color tubes were Red, Green and Blue, also referred to as RGB. This shows, interestingly, the inverse relationship of the physics of color between the primary and secondary colors in the Additive and Subtractive processes. Sadly, college students are still being taught that red, yellow and blue are primary colors. That is not true and proven false by science. That said, there are limitations of artist pigments, especially in opaque paints such as acrylics. It is, none the less, empowering to know the truth about the physics of color as it informs us in our decisions in color mixing. Color, and how we perceive it, is still as magical as ever. However, when we add a little bit of science to our art and design, we become the magicians of the stage.
