We had a blast at yesterday’s Mahjong 102 class with Elva from Let’s Play Mahjong. After a review of the 101 class, the group played a few games with Elva’s close guidance. Elva will be back this summer or fall for another round of Mahjong 101 and 102, so stay tuned. In the meantime, at Hudson Valley Vintage, we will be hosting open play on Wednesday evenings (and possibly more). If you’d like to get in on open play, post your email in the comments or send a message.

Today’s featured vintage vinyl is Moving by Peter, Paul and Mary, released in 1963. Moving is the second studio album from the folk trio. Formed in New York City during the folk music revival, Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers were influenced by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. The band became well known in the civil rights movement, fighting against racism, war, and injustice. The biggest hit of Moving was “Puff the Magic Dragon,” reaching number two on the charts. It was alleged that the song was about ma*****na, with “puffing” slang for smoking pot and “Jackie Paper” slang for rolling papers. In truth, the song was inspired by a poem by Ogden Nash. Co-writers Peter Yarrow and Leonard Lipton explained the song is an allegory, mirroring the concept of Peter Pan. Peter, Paul and Mary broke up in 1970. After a few reunion tours they reunited fully in 1981.
