This is a bowl that I initially turned a couple years ago. I never did finish it though I think because it developed several small cracks. It has been sitting around on a shelf below one of my workbenches, along with a handful of others, and I finally thought I should see about getting it sanded and finished up. I used some black super glue to fill some of the larger cracks before doing much for sanding. I finished it with multiple coats of a shellac mix and then buffed it. I believe it’s maple but can’t fully remember lol.

Finally got these white oak side boards put on my dads 37’ Ford truck. We still have the pieces that will go behind the cab to put on but that should be the easiest part. I think these turned out pretty nice and gives the truck some added character.

Lisa and I have been wanting to have a bit of a shelf in our kitchen window for quite some time now as the window sills in our house are only about 2”. We have been keeping our daughters multivitamin bottle up on the kitchen window sill so that we will remember it but the bottles are wider than the sill is and the slightest bump on the counter is always causing the bottle to fall off. We tried putting the gummy’s in a zip lock bag but they still seem to fall off. Well I finally got a shelf made and put up. It made of a piece of mostly natural edge cherry that is some 30+- years old (I know for a fact that it’s more than 26 years old) that came out of my parents previous house before they had a new one built. I forgot to take a picture of the actual window sill in the kitchen before attaching the shelf but did take a picture of one of the other window sills to show how those look. The first few pictures are of our bathroom window sill and the pill bottle is roughly the size (that is actually a little smaller) of the bottles of the multivitamins that we get for our daughter just to show how shallow they are. Then the the last three are of the shelf in the kitchen window. I know those pictures aren’t all that great where they were taken when the weather was kind of crappy.

A fun but challenging piece that I made for a Halloween challenge. It was kind of nice to make something different and to try something completely new. The body is a piece of elm that came off my parents property this summer and the lid is what I believe is some type crabapple that came off of my property a couple years ago while doing some pruning. It’s about 4 1/2” at the widest part of the body, the foot is about 3 1/8” in diameter, and is almost 7”. I had never done any carving on a turned piece and I don’t very often turn hollow forms like this.

Finally got the table base all set up with my friends table top. I think it turned out pretty well. The legs on it were something completely new to me that I had never done before so it was a good learning experience for me in that area. They were pretty pleased with it and happy to have their table all together and usable. It by no means is perfect as it has some relatively minor flaws. There was a very slight change in design that may or may not stick out much but my friend didn’t really care about because it still turned out nice.. I included some pictures of the original pieces that I was given along with some of when it was in the works. Hope you like it. Let me know what you think

I haven’t posted anything for projects that I’ve finished or have been working on in a while, and don’t really have an explanation or excuse as to why. Lately I’ve been working on making a table base for a friend, the original base got destroyed in a move. I’ve also been working on a few bowls and other turnings. I made a handful of cutting boards a couple months ago. That turned out pretty nice. So I’ve still been busy working in the shop. I’ll try to post some pictures of some of these projects later.

A small cherry salad bowl that I just got finished up. This was something that I started back in early summer last year. I had the outside roughly shaped but I found a section of a knot that was pretty rotten so I cleaned all of the soft material out and filled the area with some 5 minute epoxy. It had been sitting around since putting the epoxy in the hole left from the rot. I got back to working on it about a week or so ago. I reshaped the outside before getting to in inside. The wall thickness is a little over 1/4”. It is 7 1/4” in diameter at the rim, about 3 1/2” at the base, and sits a hair over 2 5/8”.

Lately I’ve been working on a segmented urn for our dog Charlie. It’s definitely still a work in progress as can be seen but I’m getting there. The body is made up of maple segment rings. The bottom and top are solid walnut. There are some pictures that shows how/where it all starts out.

A couple shelves that I made a installed for a customer. The shelves were 1x6” pine that was first stained with a maple stain and then finished with a satin polyurethane. The shelves have a Roman Ogee profile on the underside. The customer bought the mounting brackets and stained those herself however I did have to cut off a small section of the brackets as they were longer than the width of the shelves. The shorter shelf had the profile routed on both ends as well as one long edge while the longer shelf only had the profile on the one edge. I think they turned out pretty well.

This is something completely new to me. I cast a couple small chunks of cherry burl in resin that I mixed some color pigment powder into. I just had it in a 5 or 6 ounce disposable plastic cup. It was very interesting to turn as this was also my first time turning a resin/epoxy piece as it turns very differently than wood. Overall I think it turned out fairly well.
If I’m going to do much more casting in the future I will/should invest in a pressure pot that collapses any bubbles that might be in the resin from mixing it up. I did have a few small bubbles in the piece that showed up when I was turning it. What do you think? Let me know.

A couple of small bowls made from cherry burl. One is 5” at the rim, 3 3/8” at the base, and is 2 7/16” tall. The other is 4 5/8 at the rim, 3 1/8 at the base, and is 2 3/16” tall. The bowl with the more natural edge is the larger and the smaller is the one that has more of the burl figure all the way through. They are both finished with Howard’s feed and wax which is a beeswax and orange oil mix.

I built a smallish cabinet recently to have by the door that goes into my shop to keep all of my various finishes, glues, paste wax, cleaners, ect. I used to keep all of these right in my shop on some shelves but my shop isn’t heated, except when I’m working in there. The cold can cause some of the finishes and glues to degrade. Since it was completely for utilitarian use and is hung in the basement I just used plywood to build it. It is 19” wide x 27” tall x 11 1/2” deep. I think it turned out looking pretty nice considering that it’s made just from plywood. I also turned a cherry nob for the door. I used some tent bungees, the things that hold the tarp to the frame whatever they are called , to keep things in place or to prevent them from being knocked over.
