For all the mothers - we see you and we love you.

The Sycamore by Wendell Berry

In the place that is my own place, whose earth
I am shaped in and must bear, there is an old tree growing,
a great sycamore that is a wondrous healer of itself.

Fences have been tied to it, nails driven into it,
hacks and whittles cut in it, the lightning has burned it.
There is no year it has flourished in
that has not harmed it. There is a hollow in it
that is its death, though its living brims whitely
at the lip of the darkness and flows outward.

Over all its scars has come the seamless white
of the bark. It bears the gnarls of its history
healed over. It has risen to a strange perfection
in the warp and bending of its long growth.

It has gathered all accidents into its purpose.
It has become the intention and radiance of its dark fate.

It is a fact, sublime, mystical and unassailable.

In all the country there is no other like it.

I recognize in it a principle, an indwelling
the same as itself, and greater, that I would be ruled by.

I see that it stands in its place and feeds upon it,
and is fed upon, and is native, and maker.

Our whole business is built upon working with repurposed and recycled materials. We are proud to say that every day our team is making a real difference.

Today we took a longer than usual morning break and shared bagels and a little arts + crafts time together. We took salvaged wood slices and scrap steel and assembled outdoor wind chimes that we plan to give away and let kids decorate and take home during Raleigh Earth Day at Dix Park on Friday April 24th between 5-8pm on Harvey Hill.

Please come visit the Raleigh Reclaimed tent and learn more about the thousands of trees we have diverted from the landfill, the tons of carbon we have sequestered, the vintage machinery we have saved, the sawdust we have repurposed to heat people's homes, and the many ways our business supports beautiful design while still being kind to the Earth.

It was a good day.

It's always the greatest compliment when a designer, builder or architect chooses us for work on their own home or office. Over the years we have completed many of those projects and have several in process right now but here is a peek at one we completed for our friends when they moved into their dreamy office space.

This steel and glass door system we created and installed was the perfect functional addition to a wide open floor plan that needed a small private office space. Light from old windows, high ceilings, historic floors and brick - the space is gorgeous. Kate and her team always have a beautiful vision and we are proud to be part of that vision whether we are working with on a project for one of their clients or their own personal space.

We have delivered Raleigh Reclaimed pieces to sprawling estates and small lofts, but most of the time we deliver to places in between. When we make a delivery, we see only a glimpse of how one of our pieces might change (or anchor) a space but we rarely get to see it in everyday life.

, our friend and photographer, happened to be at our home one day several years ago and captured this photo of a nook in our daughter's room. The ceramic ice cream cone painted with little hands wasn't moved out of sight, her mason jar terrarium stayed in its place, the bowl from a summer art camp holding random beads and legos wasn't relocated, and it was okay that Stormy, the Carolina Hurricanes mascot, was poking into the frame from the top of another book nook.

The "Rocket Learns to Read" book has since been replaced with a series of sci-fi chapter books. There are handmade bracelets and art projects scattered on top of the dresser most days. But the bouquet from a private, special moment still hangs, the framed photo of some graffiti reminding her to read every day hasn't been replaced, and that dresser is still there - the dresser our team made just for her and just for that little nook.

The second image, by , was also taken many moons ago, of our daughter and her thank you tree. Complete with turkey hands, half-strung popcorn strings, and the blue tennis shoes that had to be worn every day regardless of the occasion or outfit, this shot always reminds me to be thankful for all the perfectly, imperfect moments. We have one child away at college now, another who just got his driver's license last week, and our daughter is blissfully enjoying the happy days of elementary school. We know how quickly it all goes.

Thanks to all of you who let Raleigh Reclaimed be part of your beautiful, perfectly imperfect, everyday days.

This week a large wood distributor (a giant in our industry) posted a photo of wood we cut, dried and supplied for a project as an advertisement to purchase wood from them. They had no involvement in that work, that project or the material. Seeing this post stung a bit because it was a project we worked hard on and were proud to be part of.

More and more we see our work pop up on the social media of others. While none of these companies expressly say they did the work shown in their posts, at least one company has taken the stance that while it is our work on their social, it is an example of work they could do. To us, it sure feels like a misrepresentation. Instead of spending time and resources fighting over the legal and ethical propriety of that viewpoint, we are going to focus our energy on our work and our clients.

Know this about Raleigh Reclaimed: We only post photos of our own work.

We hope you share this with others and tell a friend to support businesses like ours that actually do the work. Here are some of the many faces of Raleigh Reclaimed - these are the people who do the work and they deserve the credit for it.

The weather recently gave us a glimpse that spring and summer are right around the corner. Here's a little PSA as you think about decks, planters, siding, outdoor furniture, and other exterior projects.

PLEASE do NOT choose ipe or another wood cut from our treasured rainforests, a product filled with chemicals like pressure treated wood, or a composite material made with microplastics.

Ask us about thermally modified wood. Wood goes through our typical kiln drying process and then a second high heat kiln process that, among other things, "cooks" out the natural sugars in wood making it more resistant to decay, insects, and humidity changes. The result is a durable, stable, rot resistant natural product that takes domestic species like poplar, ash and pine makes them excellent choices for outdoor applications.

The technique of charring wood for durability dates back to ancient civilizations. While widely used across Europe for many decades, we now get asked about thermally modified wood almost every day as more and more people are seeking materials that are healthier, environmentally responsible, and made in the United States. Contact us or stop by to grab a sample—and enjoy the added bonus of hearing us geek out about the science and beauty behind our favorite outdoor wood.

In a world where everyone is cutting their table tops using a computerized machine, we don't do that. We made this table and these benches by hand in Raleigh, North Carolina, just like all of our products.

These pieces were not made with wood shipped back and forth across an ocean but from wood otherwise meant for your local debris landfill.

They are made with solid black walnut wood not something you later learn is really a thin piece of wood over some type of composite "core."

This is the color of a real, natural, organic wood that will age as you do.

Each of these pieces have our high-quality finish on them NOT a wax finish that looks good initially but offers no real long-term protection for spills without significant maintenance.

This is a table that is meant to be used, eaten on, spilled on, worked on, and laughed around. Coasters not required.

This is not a collection of computer generated images. This is real wood and real sustainable craftsmanship by real people. This is Raleigh Reclaimed.

We talk about our re-purposed wood all the time but how about this example of our team's work with recycled American steel? Hours and hours spent dialing in the perfect patina. Meticulously hand-applying all the rivets. Integrating locking drawers. Obsessing over the radius edges. Our team even handmade the hardware. Don't underestimate our steel game.
