Travis Hyatt Design Guided by traditional material, processes, contemporary furniture design methods, I am a craftsman. Furniture is something we interact with everyday. It's ugly.

Guided by traditional material and processes, using contemporary industrial furniture design methods, I am a craftsman. My work blends my lived experiences with my craft-design interests. Using non-literal representations, my furniture seeks to reflect my personal memories in subtle fashions. These can be found in the details, materials and profiles that I use. Staying curious in the present, I am

constantly reminded of where I come from, which guides where my work goes. I have a unique story to tell and am constantly evolving toward an authentic voice from which my pieces aim to exhibit. From foster youth to veteran adulthood, I have overcome many trials and tribulation. Telling my story in a palatable manner, I work to implement my lessons and memories into my craftwork. First sketching through ideas and thinking of ways I can make functional furniture from them. Then puzzling through the design and craft process to execute those ideas into tangible objects. There are many creative outlets I could have channeled my creativity into but furniture has a special place to me. It is art, yet functional. It elevates living spaces which elevate living people. It brings back memories and helps facilitate new ones. It's physical & emotional. It's sexy. It's engaging. My pieces on a superficial level, hope to display aesthetic beauty, but further investigation would reveal my niche story and elicit deeper curiosity.

I spend my life living by a creed that was learned through blood, sweat, tears, and a lot of repetition.

In this creed, the final sentence sums up why I honor those who have sacrificed everything for loved ones, neighbors, and strangers alike: “I serve with the memory and pride of those who have gone before me for they loved to fight, fought to win and would rather dye* than quit.”

While you are enjoying some much needed R&R this Monday, take a moment to pause, and think about those whom have sacrificed for your safety and freedom.

Here’s to those who didn’t quit!

With blood, sweat , and tears, I am so happy that the Bianca Desk recently delivered.

Constructed from solid white oak, this monster of a desk design was an engineering feat and required several steel brackets along the radius on both waterfall legs. The design was driven by interlocking two sections which formed a gap along the front edge, lending well for some functional pencil drawers. The amount of sanding I had to do on the interior corners left my arms vibrating and tingling for days. I do love how slightly uneven the surfaces feel. A reminder that I touched every square inch of this beauty.

I have another one of these coming up in black walnut and I look forward to applying what I learned from this one.

I’m Travis, the callused hands behind all the work you see here. I put my heart and soul into the pieces that makeup my portfolio and I hope that you can see that in every detail. I am honest in my approach to design, business, and collaboration. Pride is wrapped up deeply in my delivery and I always appreciate when folks stop and take note of that.

I’m not as active on social media as a used to be which has been really good for my mind, but bad for “growth” in the exposure sense. That said, I will always engage when I can and respond to sincere interactions.

The brass and walnut on this Ruffle wall unit pair so perfectly. Inspired by the modularity of the infamous CADO unit, I integrated the oscillating texture of my Ruffle series to bring this design to life.

Tubular Dining Table.

This “Tubular” table went through several variations before landing on its final form. Not a sharp edge on this design exists which makes for a playfully approachable place to gather.

The design is defined by its legs whereby each one takes shape by extruding a torus. A stout gusset is then mortised into each tube of a single leg and then mounted into a register at each corner of the racetrack shaped surface. A diameter of three inches is what guides the thickness of the parts. All of these factors give this unique design a fun, sturdy, and simple form.

Thank a Veteran:

Veterans know the importance of helping out when it matters. Veterans bear mental and physical weight-loads that are inconceivable to most western civilians and they have a necessary perspective on things that many of us lack. Veterans understand what it means to sacrifice. Their bravery, courage, and fortitude happens everyday, mostly in silence. They don’t always want to talk about their time in war, but will always lend an ear and offer a hand when you need it. Most of them live by a certain code of values that can be learned from.

I might encourage you to say “thank you” to your local veteran but many of us don’t always know how to respond to that gratitude.

I would encourage you instead to ask “What should I be thankful for?” That they could give you an answer for.

Happy Veterans Day to all my brothers, today and everyday.

Last year, and I built this rack for his fly rod tubes. David essentially designed & built it while I engineered the build & provided guidance on the craft. It was a fun bonding experience and I was happy to be teaching something that I personally love. Even cooler, David left with something he loves. A piece of usable furniture he can proudly say that he made.

I’ve been considering doing something like this again for others where I have a one on one training in which they too can learn the fun of puzzling through an idea until it’s turned into a tangible & functional object.

Have always wondered why I never see indoor picnic tables. Here is one I designed with brass details on hardwood black walnut.
Think about how economical they are. You purchase a table in which you don’t need the extra cost of chairs. I can imagine this looking phenomenon in a plant heavy sun room. Bringing that “picnic in the park” back to the comfort of your home.
