I finally found time to get into the shop to make this custom Figured Maple Peppermill/salt shaker for a client. She wanted as large a salt reservoir as possible so I came up with this shape based off of a bishop chess piece. The entire cap is the salt cellar and not only has a hole bored through but has also been hollowed out to match the outer contour, maximizing the volume of the space. This was a fun problem solving project and it gave me an opportunity to play with some settings on my light box. What do you think?

7 more bowls added to our collection. Some years ago I was contacted to help remove a tree from the family farm and preserve the wood to make gifts for the family members. These beautiful cherry bowls are a continuation of many such gifts I have been able to make for this family.
After making so much sawdust I am looking at adding air filtration to my wood shop. What has everyone used and how did you like it?

Here is your friendly reminder to oil or waxyour wooden kitchen ware. If your cutting board or wooden spoon is looking "dry" instead of "wet" or finished then it is time to apply some oil to protect it. There are several products available. My personal favorite is Artisan Lemon oil wax from www.woodturnerscatalog.com.
Butcher block oil or plain mineral oil will work as well. Avoid vegetable oil as it has a potential to go rancid on your board. Also avoid anything not specifically marked food safe.
Help your heirloom wooden wares last a lifetime.

A conversation this morning between my wife and our 2 year old daughter:
"Where daddy?"
"Dad is at work."
"Oh dad is at work. Where Hillary?"
"Hillary is also at work."
"Oh Hillary also at work. Where Fwap(Phillip)?"
"Fwap is at work too."
"Oh. I also at work, I work daddy's shop!"

The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup! I made this stubby figured maple scoop as part of a turning competition a few years ago. You would be suprised how many uses it finds in the kitchen. Coffee, rice, flour, sugar. All the good stuff.
