Long time without posting, here's a look at the studio lately.

Mostly making major upgrades/repairs to the CNC after the Z axis crashed.

Got some cool projects scheduled out after this all done.

Sketch, Plan, Make.

Small behind the scenes to my design and build process. Most projects start out rough in the sketchbook. They make their way to 3D models which become 2D shop plans complete with diagrams of joinery, dimensions of parts, and full cut lists.

Some design elements are made with pen and paper, some with a mouse and keyboard, and a lot with chisels and hand planes.

Inlay and burl details on the burly elm dining table.

Before I was convinced this was the look I wanted I modeled it using

At first I was worried it would look too busy, or just plain not good. I love the ability and freedom to work on the fly like this, not stick to a ridgid order of operations where everything has to be a certain way. Being able to come up with creative solutions to design problems as they come is a truly rewarding experience and why I like building furntiure in the first place.

Modeling this first also allowed me to come up with a template for the two sizes of inlay I needed, one 16" and one 8". I was able to use the CAD/CAM features of Fusion to allow my CNC to quickly make a custom template for the inlays.

Elm Burl dining table featuring walnut center piece, rib inlays, and modern art deco inspired base.

Handmade with traditional and modern woodworking techniques in Oregon.

Spec piece made in collaboration with

Elm Burl live edge slab and walnut all ethically sourced and supplied through them.

After flattening the original elm slab was slightly short of a dining table sized width so I cut it down the middle, flipped the pieces, and added a 4" walnut center piece. This created the desired width and a different take on what is considered a "live edge" table.

Personally I am not a fan of big epoxy poured tables so I opted to fill the negative space with 1" walnut rib inlays which also adds to the usable space of the table as well.

The walnut base features elm burl sides sourced from the same tree as the top. Aesthetically the base was inspired by art deco suspension bridges of the early 20th century. Features entirely book-matched walnut pieces on each side creating a mirror like effect down the center seam of the table.

Extremely proud of this build, the entire process from designing to finishing was an exercise in creativity and patience.

The table measures approximately:
L: 80"
W: 34"
H: 32"

This spec table is currently available for sale directly from us.
Price: $7,000

3D renders of a modern Z chair and end table cabinet.

Models made parametrically using .

I like using Autodesk Fusion for pretty much all of my CAD work. Having integrated rendering capabilities built into a parametric CAD program like Fusion is a game changer for my workflow.

I am able to model my design, create 2D drawings for my shop, and generate realistic renders for clients.

More and more I am utilizing my CNC router into projects, using CAM capabilities in Fusion I am able to generate G Code for templates and carving out parts and designs.

Details of walnut bowties reinforcing filled cracks in a live edge maple table top.

I prefer to use contrasting woods when doing bowties in my tables, this means darker woods such as walnut or mahogany in maple tops and lighter woods such as maple or cherry in walnut tops.
