Smoking bench, 1897.
Designed by Hector Guimard, this extraordinary Art Nouveau piece was created for the billiard and smoking room of the Roy property at Les Gévrils, in Loiret. More than just a seat, it combines a bench, display niche, and shelf into one flowing composition, turning furniture into a kind of interior architecture. Its asymmetrical frame and plant-like curves are a perfect example of Guimard’s belief that furniture could feel alive, almost as if it had grown into the room.
