I’ve always been fascinated by how things are made. Working with Bass & Bennett means I get to see that process up close, over and over again.
In Marrakech, we visited a zellige workshop where artisans were shaping each tile by hand, using simple tools and a lot of skill. In these videos, you’ll see them hammering out heart shapes. We didn’t share a language, but I'd like to think we shared the moment. Us in awe of their work, them proud to show it. The real language was the sound of the hammer.
Once the pieces are formed, they’re assembled into intricate patterns. Tables fountains, you name it. We have some in the shop now.
One of the artisans made me a heart and asked me to join him for a photo. I have it framed as a reminder of why we do what we do at Bass & Bennett: we believe in things made by human hands, in the stories behind them, and in bringing those pieces from far away into homes where they’ll be used and loved.
