Since that time, what started with 1,680 members has grown to serve more than 73,000 customers in five counties over more than 7,300 miles of power lines. Along with providing reliable service, Blue Ridge has evolved to provi

de services to its members that are relevant and transformative in a changing world. There were a lot of laughs and stories told as our co-op gathered earlier this week to wish Roger "Oreo" Newton well as he retires at the end of the month. Oreo has worked at the co-op for over 40 years, starting in the right-of-way maintenance department before moving into operations. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who knows our electrical system better than Oreo — and that's without a map.

Thank you, Oreo, and enjoy retirement!

Happy REA Day! On May 11, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed an executive order establishing the Rural Electrification Administration. A year later, Congress passed the Rural Electrification Act, and the lending program that became the REA got underway.

While we weren't founded until August 14, 1940, our history can certainly be traced back to this historic move that brought electric service to rural communities. Mr. F.O. Durham served as the co-op's acting manager in the early 1940s, and this badge he wore tells part of that story.
