To Stub or Not to Stub? | Weekly Tip | Cigar Aficionado:

No, smoke it as long as you like. But take caution.

Handmade, premium ci**rs can be smoked to the very end, if you wish. But you can expect some change in flavor at some point in the smoke.

Moisture and tars accumulate near the head of a cigar as you puff. At some moment during the smoke, typically when there is about a third or less of the cigar remaining, the flavor of the cigar can change, and get bitter, or somewhat harsh. That moment is referred to when a cigar ‘turns.' The oils and moisture have accumulated and have tainted the flavor of the cigar.

There is no set rule for when a cigar does or does not turn. We have smoked ci**rs that didn't turn at all, and have very carefully smoked ci**rs down to the point where very little cigar remains. Some of us have put our facial hair in danger of flame while doing this.

If you opt to smoke a cigar down to the very end, be careful and remember the end of the cigar is lit.

Cigar rotation | Weekly Tip | Cigar Aficionado:
Should I rotate the position of ci**rs in my humidor?

Yes, every two or three months.

Even in the most well-crafted humidor, some spots don't receive as much humidity as others.

For example, smokes that rest on the bottom of a typical desktop box receive less humidity than those near the top, where the humidification device is affixed. Shuffling the ci**rs every couple of months ensures equitable moisture distribution. For those who have the luxury of a walk-in humidor, the same principle applies.

Ci**rs stored in areas that for whatever reason receive less humidity need to be regularly cycled through a high-humidity area.

The Great Component-Flavor Debate | Weekly Tip | Cigar Aficionado:

Which component of the cigar contributes most prominently in its flavor profile: the wrapper, binder or filler?
The complete answer, like a great cigar blend, is quite complex, while the short answer is, it depends.

While there are an infinite number of variables that can alter the taste of a cigar—soil content, to***co variety, climate, curing, fermentation, aging and format (just to name a few)—most cigarmakers would agree that a wrapper has the best potential to impact the subtle secondary notes great ci**rs can impart.

The key word in the above sentence, though, is potential. How much a wrapper influences flavor depends upon type, seed origin and how it’s used. Like a chef in the kitchen, a cigarmaker, when blending, picks and chooses different percentages of wrapper, binder and filler—the three main components of a handmade cigar—to accentuate or diminish certain flavors.

Binder is the to***co leaves that hold together the filler, the heart of the cigar that determines overall strength or weakness (i.e. body). The combination of binder and filler create the bunch, which can have a significant impact on a cigar’s overall flavor. In a larger ring gauge cigar like a robusto, the bunch is more likely to affect flavor than the wrapper because the ratio of bunch to wrapper is far greater; whereas in a lancero, the wrapper will probably play a heavier role since there is less filler to***co.

The vertical brand tastings we conduct in Cigar Insider, our semimonthly digital newsletter, provide some evidence that size and format can drastically alter a blend. In a recent vertical of the Romeo by Romeo y Julieta line, the 6 1/8-inch by 52 ring Piramide, a figurado, scored 92 points, the highest in the line, while the 6 by 54 Toro scored the lowest at 86 points. What caused this 6-point difference is the essence of your question: is it the wrapper, binder, filler or something else?

Some companies, such as Arturo Fuente, intentionally riff off this debate and use it as inspiration to create unique ci**rs, like its Hemingway Between the Lines line, a cigar covered with two different wrappers rolled to resemble a barber pole. When smoked, enthusiasts will notice a flavor change as the burn hits different wrappers.

So it remains, the topic of which cigar component influences flavor the most is a great debate in the industry, and one that likely won’t get solved anytime soon.
